transmission

ive been asking them specifically how much theyd charge if i brought in a transmission, here it doesnt seem to be a problem. the city im currently in isnt the wealthiest, hell actually it was voted one of the worst cities to do business by forbes magazine... lol so shops will take any work they can get.

yeah just make sure they're aware you only want them to do labor. Some shops build their business around parts mark up, thats what Stealth is saying...so as long as they know up front you're supplying the parts, and they agree to do it, you're fine...

so...i'd say take your car, your 626 gear box, 2 new axle seals (rockauto or partsgeek should have those for cheap, as well as parts stores like Autozone), and 3 quarts of something like Red line MT-90...that should be all they'd need, and you'd only have to worry about labor on their end...They'll probably tell you your engine mounts are bad and things like that, but tell them you'll deal with that later on your own...especially if you're going to eventually be putting the MSP gear box back in...

Yeah, i know all the other things that are wrong with the car, like my endlinks are shot, i know that. my mounts should be fine, as i have awr inserts on all corners. thanks for the info man, ill be sure to get all that before going. You guys really helped me out here.

Just to make sure im getting the proper part, i am going to be getting an input shaft seal and an output shaft seal, correct? otherwise i dont see anything else in terms of seals under the transmission section of rockauto.

the output shaft seals are for the diff...the input shaft seal goes inside the bell housing...its for the splined shaft that presses into the clutch blade...its not a terrible idea to replace that too, since the box is off and its a pita to get to otherwise...

I think there should be a left output shaft seal and right output shaft seal, but not positive...if there is only one output shaft seal, you need 2 of those...

Can i use any cheap manual tranny fluid? this is only a temp fix, as in only a couple weeks, so id rather not go spend twice the money i have to.

Any fluid that meets the spec will be fine for a short duration. 75w-90 gl4 I think. Theoretically it should be fine permanently, but just buy the cheap stuff and put some redline or royal purple in when you get it all fixed.

Really though if it's only going to be a couple weeks is look at renting a car. If you look around the web for a coupon you might be able to rent for cheaper and a lot less trouble than swapping transmissions if you plan to swap them right back.

im 22 =\ and in new york you have to be 25 to rent a car. itll probably go from a couple weeks to a month or two, but nothing longer than that. thanks for the info!
