The fact is it resembles an open differential. How it works the closest explanation was the posi trac thing. I only know of helical gear and clutch pack lsds. I wonder how the revised springless lsd exerts pressure to lock up the spider gears? Maybe the revised is a wannabe phantom grip?

Something to note is the original MSP LSD was a clutch type...

There is really no new word if a new has been developed, but I will call and find out for sure.

I was under the impression/understanding that the original was not just a clutch type.. it was a type 1.5 or half clutch half gear, hence it's action as a torque sensing LSD. It used clutches but also mixed it with a conical gear set to achieve what it did.

What I want to know from Txmazdaspeeder is where he sourced those MSP Trannies? I just did a swap yesterday, and a used 03 tranny with 30k mi on it cost me about $760.

That word is from the TSF, the manufacturer...Clutch style on the original.

I'm still waiting to hear about if they have a newer version running aorund or not.

It may not have necessarily been sooner... (that would be different than what I thought... but you could certainly be right!) but rather harder... I preferred the smoother lock up as less jarring to the steering and a more predictable response..

here are the pics though for you! I included one of the stock open diff so you can see the differences there too.

edit: the welds you see along the edge were something I had done... not normally there!

i was going off the fact that 1FASTMP5 has a MSP trans with 20k miles for sale for $300, and the local salvage yard has a es tranny with 11k miles for $175

Damn, when I asked him a while back, he wasn't selling it. What happened between then and now to make him sell it. I would have jumped all over that deal. (sad2)
