transmission shot or lsd?

so i just picked up an '03 last week from my buddy. he blew out the trans or lsd im pretty sure. from what he told me he (not sure if he was telling the story completely accurately) he was driving down the road and he said he needed to pass a cyclist, he said he was going 20mph (which i doubt) but anyway he downshifted from 5th to 2nd causing the clutch to shread to peices and something else to break. he had a new clutch put in, but still no power to the wheels, the mechanic said the trans was gone. im not so certain its the trans, i know if you look at these cars wrong the LSD blows up haha, so would anyone have any thoughts? trans? lsd? anyone have any imput? im new to this forum today, hope i posted this in the right spot, im used to cherokee forums which is alittle different.

what exactly is the car doing? and yeah I highly doubt he was doing 20 if he had to shift from 5th to 2nd.

Well from what i heard if the car is in any gear there is no power(havent started to rip it apart yet), so that led me to believe it could be the lsd or the output shaft in the trans, but its not like the car has alot of hp so thats why i was starting to lean towards the LSD........... I think he was trying to downshift from 5th- 4th and completely failed haha thats why he says he was going 20mph, but why 5th at 20mph haha thats what doesnt line up.

Either way it's horrible driving. He probably didn't rev match and it ****** the transmission starting with the syncros

Yeah i know that, hes an idiot haha, you can get it in gear no problem and let the clutch out but no power to the wheels in any gear, luckly he only had the car for 5k, i was just wondering what people thought if it could be the LSD

Its the diff, not many things fail in these transaxles without excess HP in play. Only way to know is to crack the case and see it.

Thank you, someone finally with a good answer, i was going to take the trans out anyway, but this will save me alot of diagnosing, and time, thats the first thing ill look into taking apart then is the lsd

I would really say its the LSD since its such a common problem. When mine broke I could still go for a bit at low speed and then it died completely and I couldn't move at all.

Ok, could u shift through the gears no problem, but it woudnt move or act different then normal? Cause then that would be the exact same thing thats happening here, is there a way to change/look at the lsd without pulling trans?

I broke my diff and drove it 5 miles the next day I went to drive it on the roll back to take it to work and fix it and it wouldn't drive at all

unfortunately not. only way to look at the LSD is with the transmission pulled out and casing off. im 99.9% sure anyone with experience with our cars know its the LSD thats blown. car in any gear and no movement is the LSD thats blown. if it went into gear and pops out of gear or grinds going into gear then id aim for it being a bad synchro or shredded gear. the MSP trans most common problems start with the LSD, then weak 3rd and 5th gear shredded apart from excess HP or beating the hell out these cars like a dumby.

Yeah thats whats happening, as soon as i find time to pull the trans then ill confirm that, http://www.protegegarage.com/488-product-488.html is this a good lsd to get or http://www.mazdaboys.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=MAZ-MSP-WLSD is this one also fine, i dont have the funds for a quaif lsd $1300 is alot
