Transmission Problems

You have so many vehicles that offer this in the CX-5 Price range - Toyota Sequoia, Porsche Cayenne, some BMWs etc. Cannot understand why Mazda does not do this.

Sequoia starts at 45K, Cayenne at 60K. BMW X3 starts at 40K new. That is not even remotely close to the 24-33K CX5 price range. Add in options and those vehicles are double the price of a CX5.

Adjustable suspensions ultimately result in expensive repairs. Adding such features would significantly bump up total cost and negatively impact Mazda's reputation of quality and durability.

What Mazda does need to include in the redesign: next generation engines with better fuel mileage and improved torque for real world performance similar to the 2.5t drivability. That will help sell more cars.

My 1995 Trans Am had a "Sport" (it was called "Performance") button that raised shift points and firmed up line pressure to the point that it would lay serious rubber on the 1-2 shift under WOT, and I believe relaxed the TC settings a touch, and under part throttle it would shift much more crisply. It definitely made a difference, and it did it all without having the engine racing around a gear too low...This was in 1995. Much more advanced. Shame.

Alrighty, back to the tranny. Parked on a very slight incline, shifted to park, applied the EPB, released foot brake.

took a nice 1 hr 15 minute walk for my lunch break.

Climb back into the CX5, start 'er up. apply foot break, go to shift out of park while EPB still on, and resistance as usual.

why am I not surprised.

Try it this way.

Appy foot brake. Start her up. Turn EPB off. Leave foot on brake. Shift out of park.

K. Just tested that way. Shifted smoothly out of park that instance. HOWEVER, decided to shift back into park and then back into drive. Major resistance. Foot never left brake pedal.

This almost proves to me it's the shift-lock mechanism problem. Transmission is fine.

Didn't you think it got replaced with the shifter assembly? Or did I misinterpret your post?
Yes, what I believe is your dealer replaced the right part, but the new shift mechanism may be either defective or improperly installed or adjusted. Another unlikely scenario is your dealer actually didn't replace the whole shift mechanism although the repair ticket did mention the part number. Lastly, the brake switch may be defective intermittently. When they tested it they thought the switch was fine. I guess if you really want to resolve the issue, the only way is to go back to your dealer and ask them to fix it. Of course Mazda North American Operations may need to get involved too.

I'll bring it up when I go in for the rear hatch strut recall. Thx again

Good luck and hope your dealer is more cooperative this time. Since you originally said you thought the brake switch was replaced, may be you should verify with them that what they actually had done in the first attempt fixing the issue.

And the liftgate struts for the recall are available now? Strangely I haven't received any letter yet? In fact, I haven't got any recalls done yet including the fuel filler pipe recall. Not to mention the broken Navigation system. I need to visit my dealer getting those things done as I don't have too much time left from new car warranty. Too lazy to visit my Mazda dealer. :)

Whoops. It was the recall notice for the airbags which they've already performed. My bad. Just assumed it was for the hatch struts since they already did the air bag service when I brought it back still complaining about the shifter resistance.

I don't think the recalls are dependent on your car still being in warranty. Did you at least get the airbag update/service (they're not calling it a recall) done?

No, I haven't visited service department of my Mazda dealer for a while as I DIY on every maintenance. Haven't done anything on 2 recalls and Special Service Program A6 on passenger-side airbag. But the GPS and A-pillar trim piece problems definitely need to get fixed before warranty expires. I'm hoping to get EPB warning light soon so that I could get my whole EPB system updated based on a TSB and avoid potential future problems without warranty!
