Transmission Fluid Question(s)

Just got my car a few weeks ago, '07, 44k miles on it..... Had some smoke coming out of exhaust. They said I needed to change tranny fluid, looked like it had never been changed. I did some research on this forum and auto part store also said to use a 80w-90 and I hear a lot about mt-90. When I asked dealer what they used, he said it was like a 5 or 10w - 30? Told me that's what's recommended, but he is the ONLY person that has said that. I honestly don't trust the b@$t@rd. He also told me that a 90 is way to thick and the car won't drive right. Thinkin about doing it myself when I install my rear MM, although I'd rather not (kinda lazy and don't mind payin money for it). I don't know to much about fluids, what do you guys think about what the dealer is trying to put in my car? What is the difference between the different tranny fluid/gear fluids? OR, is there already a thread explaining this?

I'd let the dealer or someone else do it for you. Tranny fluid has a very distinct smell that won't go away once it's on you. I hate it lol.

no offense, but considering your technical know-how, just take it to the dealer and ask for a tune up and oil change for both engine and tranny.

gl hf welcome to the forums.

make babies.

Yeah, they changed the oil, supposedly have to due to smoking issue before they can do anything else about it. Just worried about the tranny fluid this guy wants to use; I want to make sure i'm running the correct fluid. It's a daily driver, but I plan on driving it kinda hard and know that tranny fluid is quite important to say the least. I wish I had more faith in my local dealer, but the guy was surprised that my driver's side motor mount is shot.... said he doesn't see a lot of problems with the motor mounts (my first clue that I shouldn't trust em, and yeah, he seriously said that). Thanks for the input.

the tranny fluid type is in your owners manual if you want to go the way of the OEM. if not there are other tranny fluid types that others have recommended on other threads.

I would RUN from that dealer - they apparently don't know the difference between engine oil and transmission fluid. The tranny takes a 75W-90. The engine takes 5W-30.

Hopefully you were talking to an ignorant sales weenie and not a service tech.

Check the how-to section on changing tranny fluid. It does require some tools/equipment, but if you're not up to it, I suggest you find a dealer with a good service dept.

That's what i told him; I thought he was talking about my engine oil, but he wasn't.... needless to say, took it to a local shop today and they used 75w-90. Thanks for the input

I know this one is dead, but for those who care. Almost got screwed by local shop also, ended up doing it myself... 75w-90 synthetic. Easier than expected, thanks for your input..... And they're replacing my smokin' turbo

Replacing the tranny fluid in this car is easier than changing the oil. I changed to Redline MT-90 this made shifting smoother once the tranny warms up but does not help with the cold morning 2nd gear grind. I will be replacing again before it turns cold to the Ford Synthetic. Motorcraft MTX-75 Full synthetic part # XT-M5-QS. I have read that this fluid does help the cold morning 2nd gear grind.

Based on my experience the Ford Synthetic is the best choice.

XT-M5-QS is the same stuff that came with my 04' SVT Focus. It's definitely a good tranny fluid. I just swapped my MS3 to Redline MT-90...
