Transmisison rebuild option

RatLabGuy

Huh? What?
:
'03 p5 and '89 4Runner; M5 (wife's)
All signs indicate I need a trans rebuild ('02 5spd, non-ABS). Car has 185k on it already. Plan to keep another 3-5 years but I only do 8k/year.
Looking to the collective for feedback on what route has proven to be most cost-effective.
I am OK w/ pulling & replacing it myself. I have another vehicle to drive but would rather this not take forever.

Option 1 - order junkyard trans. from car-part.com, looks like I could have one in my hands for $350 or so.
Pro: Cheap, easiest, it just shows up at my door. Maybe able to recoup a little $$ from recycling old one.
Con: No telling what I'm getting, aside from some yards that provide a rather short guarantee at least it hopefully shouldn't be bad right out the door.

Option 2 - order a rebuilt one online.
Pro: Easy, has more of a real guarantee
Con: not cheap

option 3 - take the trans to a local shop & have them rebuild it. I have no idea how much this would cost?
Pro: New parts & checked over buy a local guy who might actually care.
Con: Slightly more work (I have a pickup), assuming rebuild parts alone will be $300+

What say ye? Is it worth the cost/hastle to have the g-series trans rebuilt, or just go w/ the gamble and hope for 50k more miles?

Option 1, but I'd consider other sources. There's one at my local yard already pulled and sitting inside the cabin from a pristine P5 that was hit in the front. They run around 130 bucks from that yard. They can be shipped UPS or Fedex since it's less than 150 lbs. You might also be able to get one from the classifieds here.

Hey you're not too ridiculously far from me, PMing you for info on that yard...

LOL... yeah it's been a long day, mistook MO for MD...
Too damn many Springfields in this country (uhm)(boom07)
