Trans. question. Whole trans bad or LSD?

03 MSP, 110k miles. My friend took the car to a mechanic shop and they said it was just a clutch problem. So I brought the car back to my house, took off the old clutch (which didn't look that bad at all, all springs on disc looked ok). The throwout was TOAST though. So I replaced the clutch with an ACT HDSS and organic disc, new throwout bearing, etc.

Started it today and same problem. Put it in gear, and it goes nowhere. Just revs up. You can let the clutch all the way out with it in gear and it still goes nowhere. From what I've heard, these LSD's are prone to failure. Do you think that's what went? Or get a whole new trans?

This happened once to me in a Civic. Went to launch at the track, and the diff pin sheared off. Same symptoms. Any ideas? New LSD, or just new trans? Which is cheaper? Would the new LSD have to be clearanced? Or just put the final drive on the LSD and roll?

As the owner of said wounded MSP, I'm also curious what the crowd thinks...

replace lsd... becareful opening the case as its not as strong as the honda ones yer use to.. quaife seems to be the strongest but cost a ton, they have a few vendors on here that sell a welded stock updated unit. same turbogokart as on ohiohondas?

That's me! The one and only haha. What's your s/n on there?

These welded ones...are they ok for daily driving? Is it actually making the diff a true "welded diff" or just reinforcing it? My thought is, if it's a true welded diff, it would be great for the track, but not so great for daily use. Because if both wheels spin the same, then going around corners, wouldn't the tires wear out quicker? Normally one tire covers more distance around a corner/spins faster, so with a welded diff, wouldn't the inside wheel try to 'push' some? Since it would be needing to go the same speed as the outside tire.

Just thinking out loud here. :)

When you weld our LSD they are just welding the casing, not the gears on the inside. check out the M-factory LSD for a good aftermarket replacement. or you can go to protegegarage.com and get a welded one.

here is a pic of a welded LSD you can see how people weld them:

If I understand it right - the welding simply reinforces the most common breaking point of the OE diff. It still functions the same it just won't crack again as easily.
(uh...right?)

Its not the case its the bad bolts that mazda used to put the diff together with. The company that made the lsd used a better grade but mazda changed that to save some money, when they went with a cheaper bolt they gave up some reliability. that is why the lsds break all the time. so when we weld the top part to the bottom part it helps by keeping the bolts from breaking.

yeah im sure this will get you back rollin in no time. check to see if the syncro springs are flattened while yer in there.

how reliable would you say a "welded" stock lsd is?
I want something I can drive somewhat hard and launch once in a while without worrying about being stranded.
I'm plannig on about 275whp maybe 16psi on a gt2871r.
Would a welded stock lsd and gtx 3rd and 5th be alright?

Pulled the LSD tonight. Definitely broken. It broke right where the welded diff's are welded lol. Guess there's a reason for that. There's also some other thing thats broken. I'll have to go to the dealer to have them confirm what piece its called. I can't find it on alldatapro.

Go with the MFactory diff. I've heard nothing but good things about them lately. And call me crazy but 16 psi on a gt2871r is insanely low.

oh and GoKart, what do you drive and are you ever in the osu campus area or out east? Nice to see more OH folks getting on here lately.

Lol, I drive lots. Right now I have a fully built D16Z6 out of a 92-95 Civic that's putting down almost 400whp. It's in a 90 Civic hatch. I have a 99 Civic LX (4-door) for a daily driver. Slightly lowered (Tein S-Tech's). I'm just fixing this 03 MSP for my friend.

I'm looking for a Nissan 240, so I can stuff an LS1 into it. :D

So this other piece that was broken....It was held on with a spring to a piece that was bolted with a 12mm and a 10mm bolt, under the diff. Any idea what that's for? Or called?

Pics are worth 1000 words, I know. I'll try to get some up shortly.

Look around here for pics of broke lsd's. I remember seein something like that in quite a few pics. I believe it came from the inside of the LSD to apply grip/force, hence, LSD.

PS: Welcome aboard!
