Trans. question. Whole trans bad or LSD?

So this other piece that was broken....It was held on with a spring to a piece that was bolted with a 12mm and a 10mm bolt, under the diff. Any idea what that's for? Or called?

It's suppose to prevent you from throwing it into reverse directly from a forward moving gear (eg. 5th).

How do you take the final drive off the LSD? Do those pins get pressed in/out?

Drill them out. I used a drill bit just slightly smaller then the rivet hole and drilled into the head of the rivet, then used a drift to knock the rest of the head off and then to punch the rivet out. Pretty painless to do.

So does that final drive gear need to get attached to the new LSD? Or does the new LSD come with a new final drive gear? If it doesn't, I would assume they would send you bolts with the new LSD to bolt the final drive on? Or more big ass rivets? Haha.

You will need to reuse the final drive gear. The MFactory comes with lefthand threaded bolts for it. I added a bit of red Loctite to the bolts when I installed them.

If you can, use a drill press. Trying to drill them out with a hand drill might be a pain in the ass.

FYI, for those searching the thread in the future, the diff he bought from Protege Garage came with final gear already attached with the huck bolts. Basically a stock diff that was welded. Also came with both bearings and the little tapered seats they sit in for both the trans side and trans case side. Also came with a new main and countershaft nut.

Also, that piece I posted earlier as being broken - I was told it was the reverse lockout. It very well may be, but if you call the dealer and ask for that part, they'll laugh at you lol. It's called a Guide Plate, Mazda part no. F520-17-480K. In my case, the part that was broken actually comes from the dealer under the guide plate, hence the problem I had looking for the reverse lockout lol. It wasn't until Mazda faxed me a picture and I could see the reverse lockout attached to the bottom side of the guide plate. It comes as a whole (both the reverse lock out and guide plate) from the dealer.

Yeah, too bad I had already drilled out the huck bolts on the bad LSD and got the final drive off hahaha. Oh well. Didn't take that long. Battery drill and an air hammer/chisel worked great.

I know it's been quite some time since I first posted this, but just wanted to update. I got the new welded stock LSD from Protege Garage in the car back in November. Also installed the reverse lockout in. FYI, you don't actually have to pull the whole mainshaft/countershaft out of the trans case. I just lifted it up a little, and shimmied the LSD in. Put it all back together, and it's been working great so far!

Also, I installed a rear engine mount (forget the brand he's using), and let me tell you what, the car really vibrates and is loud on the inside from that mount! So it's obviously doing its job.

Yeah that's how I do it as well. You can just use a pry bar to lift the shafts slightly together and then slip the diff in and let the shafts back down.
