TPM's?

Hi Guys,

I recently got a CX7 for my wife and I must say I'm loving it. I promised myself I wouldn't change a thing on it but the mod bug keeps biting :) , and now I'm on the look out for a new set of bigger rims and tires. I was just wondering if getting bigger rims would affect the Tire Pressure Monitor on the car? I heard that the sensor works on the diameter and rotation of the wheel. If I get a bigger wheel and tire combo that might be slightly off, would this affect it? I heard this might also affect ABS. Has anyone had any experience with this? Thanks for any info.

The Mazda TMPS is part of the valve stem assembly and must be transfered to your new rims. They are not affected by rim size or tire diameter, however they may not fit on every rim due to it's holes location and shape of the rim surface. I also believe that the ABS sensors are affixed to the brake rotors and are also not affected. You may need to recalibrate the NAV if your CX-7 is so equipped, due to change in tire size.

ABS looks for one wheel not turning when others are, and responds accordingly. Wheel size should have no effect on its performance.

What do u mean by recalibrate your NAV? Thanks again.

I do not have the navigation in our CX-7, but I had read a previous post by someone who did that the nav has a calibration menu that can adjust the
navigation for different sized tires. This adjusts the navigation so that the
route instructions in miles are correct relative to vehicle speed.

careful with the tpms on changing tires a lot of tire chains have little notices up saying that they aren't responsible for breaking the sensors when changing rims due to their fragileness (is that a word lol) i would deffinatly recomend taking it to the dealer for a tpms change out.

Cool. I don't have the NAV system though so I guess there's no problem with that. I'm gonna start looking for the wheels & then start looking for a good wheel and tire shop as well, so that they won't mess up my sensors when changing it up. Thanks to all for the replies!

Oh, one more question..are these sensors small enough to fit in a lower profile tire?

Same sensors as used on the RX-8 which rides on tires that have a lot lower profile.

Hi Guys, I'm digging this thread up because I have a related question. I'm buying a set of winter wheels for my 2004 3. I do not want to pull the TPM sensors from the summer wheels/tires. Do I absolutely need new TPMS for the new wheels? If not, is there an easy way to keep the cluster from beeping at me every time I start the car?

My winter wheels have no TPMS but there is no beeping. Just the steady yellow light on the the instrument panel. Another thread somebody mentions sticking electrical tape over the faceplate. Maybe there's another way to actually disable the light.

When it comes time to replace my winter tires, I might want to get another set of TPMs and get them installed... Maybe we'll be able to get them cheaply in a few years. Anybody know a cheap source for TPM sensors?
