Tires Secured

Thanks to all who responded to my previous plea for used tires on another thread!

That said, the OEM Dunlops, in varying tread wear states, were continually very expensive-- The prices being asked were extremely high, I thought, and factoring in shipping costs would have risen the price for a used set of tires higher than that which you could find for brand new ones. This was unacceptable.

Anyway, I was able to find brand new tires, a set of 4 Kumho 711's, for $238, including shipping, from TireRack. I also researched that Costco will mount and balance any tire (even if bought elsewhere) for $9 each, which is at least half the cost of what most other places bend you over for. For those of you who are members, if you ever buy tires from elsewhere and need a place that will provide you with likely the best possible deal on mounting/balancing, keep Costco in mind!

Given my financial situation, this is still a hurtful purchase, but I hadn't any choice-- The originals were dead and unsafe.

And although these are summer rated tires, snow is extremely rare out here, so it should make little difference in the modest driving I do day to day; especially with Spring nearing.

This was the best value I could find anywhere, and I researched the issue for months. It is flat out impossible to find stock used tires in a reasonable price range, if you can find them at all in the first place-- At least in the PNW. You might as well sit around and scrape your ass with a cheese grater than try to find used 195/50/16's around here. They don't exist. (pissed) Dammit has that pissed me off. Dammit.

I continue to maintain Mazda did us an egregious disservice by putting such an insane, ridiculously rare tire size as the stock configuration on the Protege ES and 5. Shame to them and their poor decision making skills. They reallly screwed us over, in my admittedly angry opinion!

That's a good price. I paid 120 for one dunlop for my 16" ..Mazda was going to charge me 180

Forgot!

I forgot to mention that these are also 205/50/16's. I was hoping to improve the ride a bit over the original tires, and thought that this slightly larger size might help with that. They were also only $1 more per tire than the 195/50/16 size, and even I could afford that difference! (2thumbs)

Beyond ride, I'm also hopeful that these particular tires will be quieter than the original stock Dunlops. I don't know about you guys, and maybe it's just the poor noise control characteristics of the Protege itself, but I thought the OEM tires were earsplittingly noisy, irritating, and offensive. I just can't imagine these new ones will be any worse, even though I know these are pretty cheap replacements...

Alas, it's the best I could do for now... :(
