Tire Review Thread

I would like to note that the M+S rating on the proxes4 is an absolute load of horse crap.

I found them spinning like crazy on even the slightest of incline in only a dusting of snow. I feared for my life driving in a real snowstorm.

That said, they are decent tires and I like them for everything else- Since I run snow tires in the winter the snow performance is no big deal- just dont buy them thinking they will be anything close to a snow tire.

I 2nd that opinion. They were fairly useless in any kind of snow on my 2001 Maxima. It was great every where else, just not good in snow.

Tire: Kumho Ecsta Asx's

Size: 195/50-16 w-rated

Category: Ultra High Performance All-Season

Review: Very cheap tire on tirerack.com, great in wet conditions including driving through deeper puddles, great in dry season, great traction over all, cant really "hear" the tires. Winter warning: I wouldnt know because it doesnt snow in florida!
Recommend?: 100X better then the stock dunlops - didnt notice any difference in traction or grip on dry but a major difference in driving in rainy conditions.

Do they wear out fast?

The other day I took a used P5 from our used car lot for a little joy ride. It was equipped with 205/50/16 Kumho Ecsta ASX's with stock 02 wheels. I pushed it pretty hard through the corners because I was curious about the tires and the size. They were singing like newborn birds through every corner and felt a bit sloshy compared to my 205/45/16 Falken Ziex ZE512's. I can't really review it extensively because I only drove on them for about 10 minutes but damn they were loud while cornering hard. I must also add that at highway speeds they were pretty smooth and not much road noise.

anybody else had experience with the General Exclaim UHP's? what about the Kumho AST's? i'm on a budget here. i just want great life with mild performance. i'm not autocrossing or taking corners at 40+.

From what I read from some Asian local car forums, they are very happy with Kumho AST and ASX. I am going to buy a set of Kumho ASX a few months later as well.

Anyone have comments about the Bridgestone Potenza G 009 or Yokohama YK520?

How much gas mileage will I lose by going from 195-205? How much gas mileage will I lose going from 50 to 45?

60% highway driving, 40% city driving.

Thanks!

Since no one else has posted a review of these tires...

Tire: Kumho Ecsta MX

Size: 205/40-17

Category: Ultra High Performance Summer

Pros: Massive grip. They seem to wear well despite the 220 treadwear rating. Not too expensive considering how well they perform. The tread pattern looks kinda cool. I'll admit it.

Cons: I haven't found any. They might have been discontinued though.

Recommend?: Yup.

Dunlop sportmaxx

well since no one has reviewed these tires yet ill give it a go

Dunlop sportmaxx: 215/45/17

specs: 240 treadwear traction: aa temp: a

driving style: aggressive and autocross

impression: i went from toyo proxes 4 to these and omg what a difference. these things grip the road like no other street tire ive used and they're quiet. i rotate them every 3k miles so the wear on them in the last 10k is minimal considering their low treadwear. they drive great in the rain also, not a hint of hydroplanning at speeds over 80 in the rain. I would recommend these tires to anyone that does any aggressive driving and needs tires for daily driving.

recommend: hell yes( i think i found the best all around tires for me)

Anyone have any views on the Kumho 711s?
I searched, and I coudn't find any1 who had these.

TIRE: Kumho ECSTA ASX

SIZE: 195/50-16

CATEGORY: Ultra High Performance All-season

REVIEW:
These are a great improvement over stock tires. I was very impressed with the handling in the rain and snow. They can't be beat at the price for everyday driving, I have had them for 8 months and have close to 12,000 miles on them and they seem to be wearing well, I will definately buy them again. (first)

Tire: Avon Tech M550 A/S

Size: 205/45/17

Catagory: All Season

I am very disatisifed with these tires, even though they are highly rated on Tirerack.com. The person who sold his MP3 to me installed these tires right before I bought the car. Now after one year I had to replace them. The ones on the front started to split and crack on the inside portion of the tires sidewall. Grip and all is fine, but they definatly should not crack after one year.

Conclusion: I will NEVER buy Avon tires again.

195 - 205 doesn't have much of an effect on mileage, maybe 0.25 or 0.5 kilometers to the liter on the highway. A grippier tire compound would have more of an effect.

Review: Yokohama Advan Neova AD07 - 205/45-16

I'd changed from the stock Advan A460s (nice tire, grippy, but not terrific) to a set of 215/45-17s borrowed from my brother's Mazda 626. They gripped terrifically well, but I lost some steering feel on turn-in because of the wide tires and extra-wide rims (7.5 or 8, can't remember which, they rubbed like sh*t).

I ponied up and bought another set specifically for the car, 205/45-16s on ROTA GT3s.

Upsides: Great tire and tire-size for the Proty platform, good feel on turn-in, great grip. A little more thumpy than my stock wheels over bumps, but grips so well that I'm starting to experience wheel-hop when I'm not careful. Front-end grip is terrific, and the car feels dartier than when the stock tires were new. Grip levels feel similar to the track-only A038s we had on the Silvia a few years back. Haven't flogged them on the track yet, but I will next week.

Downsides: Noisy on the wrong surface, thick sidewall and rim protector make the tires look under-inflated at times (even at 36 psi! :) ). If you get a set that is too wide, they'll tramline over everything They work in rain, but lose some grip when it's cold or greasy out.

Recommed? Hell yeah. This is the third car I've had them on. Just need to match the width to the car. They're marginal as daily tires, but if you want a track-day / canyon-carving tire you don't have to swap on and off, they're great!

Tires: Kumho Ecsta ASX (ultra high performance all season)

Size: 205/50R16

Review:
Just put on Kumho ECSTA ASX (205/50R16)on my P5 today. I used to have Yokohama AVID H4s(205/45R16).

Handling seems better than the Yokohama does. Not sure if it is the tire or if it is the size change, it seems I can make the turn with less turning of the steering wheel. Or maybe the sidewall of the Kumho is thicker than the Yokohama.
The ride comfort and noise level isn't as good as the Yokohama I had.
Dry road, straight line traction and stability isn't as good as the Yokohama as well. But they aren't noisy by any means.
On dry surface, I would say the stock Dunlops are still the best especially on cornering.
Haven't really tried wet traction yet. But I am not going to go back to Yokohama for sure, they are too easy to have bubble on side wall(happen to me twice in a year) and they worn out fast.

I think my car looks better with the increased tire size cause the wheel gaps are smaller.
My tires wear out so fast so I think the cheap price of Kumho is really a plus for me.

Recommend: Yes if you are not really really picky and don't have the bucks to spend on something else more costly like Bridgestone.

Update: I finally got to try them under heavy rain last weekend. And I do mean heavy. I was able to cruz 60 to 70 on highway with no problem at all while most others are doing about 50.

But these tires are definitely not for auto-x or aggressive driving for sure.

bump! where to find good prices for falken ziex 512?

Discount Tire Direct has them for $75/tire (205/50R16) plus free shipping. You might also check with your local NTB; they can special order them. My local shop will also match the total price (incl. shipping) from an online retailer. BTW, they may tell you that the 512 are discontinued with the 329 as the replacement. This is not true; Tire Kingdom just no longer carries the 512 in stock. Sears still has the 512 & have a price match guarantee, but I've had problems getting them to match online retailers.

Good luck shopping.

also i use the kumho asx on my winter wheels and they are awsome, would not get another tire. They are the most comforable yet performance oriented tire that i beat up every day. I love them and i work at discount tire so i look at tires everyday.

yea i used that i was wondoring about anonther person that has them, not just on opinion on that tire, thanks

Tires: Republic UHP (Goodyear Sub company. Same tire as the General Exclaim UHP)

Size: 205/40/17

Review: Dry traction they were pretty good, gradual breakaway. They did wear very well and for some reason could not get them to stop eating up the sidewalls even at (45psi)! However I guess they did pretty good considering they helped me keep up with some stock MSP's in the mountains out at Taladega,AL. But in the straights of course they killed me (I have an 03 DX with Tein S. Techs). They stick very good from when new, they was no learning curve to them, they did not have to be broken in to see traction.

conclusion: Would not buy again although they are cheap. They rode on the side wall too much.

Tires:Kuhmo Ecsta 711's

Review: These tires were great to me for the first 2k miles and then they quickly began to die. They gripped so well when new that sometimes my car would oversteer in some low speed sharp corners! That was good considering I had stock springs at that time and a stock sway bar till this ver day. But that did not last long after they began to wear. Gripped extremely well when heated up. Best rain tire I ever had, they would track like a train through deep water. But just did not last long.

Conclusion: Would not buy again due to bad life span. And oh yeah, they got horrible flat spots in them when it was cold outside (-40 degrees) just leave you car for a few hours, you will see what I mean. But give them about five minutes and the thumping of the falt spots would go away. Did not like that.

Tire: Falken Azenis st 115's

Size: 215/45/17

Review: These tires were ok. They did not give me that sharp feeling rite from the start. Let them wear in a little and they began to show a little more life. They are not the greatest if you are looking to improve understeer in low speed sharp corners. However, they did have really good high speed lateral g cornering. They had some give to them. Did uncountable four wheel drifting around high speed corners (very controllable in four wheel drift). They did not have that point and stick characteristic to them though. I found they were not for low speed understeer inducing corners. And they did not show much improvment when heated compared to the others tires I have had. Most noteably the Kuhmo Ecsta 711's had a great ability to to heat up and stick better, but wore too quickly. The 115's had descent wet traction, but not the greatest in deep puddles though. The 711's exceeded in this category too. Treadwear on the 115's was pretty good, just keep them rotated. However the lack of point and stick ability was partly due to the 45 sidewall profile compared to the two other 40 sidewall profiles of the other tires I have had. But not to the point where it would make this much of a differentiation. It was not just reaction but initial turn in as well that was lacking.

Conclusion: Would not buy again, not saying they are bad tires. Just did not like the way looked either and I am also going to a much more agressive tire next (Falken Azenis RT615).
