My 03 drives fine in "d" but wont shift in the manual shift mode, when you start off from a stop it just stays in first,it says 1 on the display and wont upshift at all, when your driving and switch it over it says 3 or 4 but wont downshift of upshift at all it stays in that gear till stopped then it goes back to 1st and wont respond at all. anyone have this problem?
The dealer wants 80 bux to look at it but if its a common problem maybe I can fix it. are there electric contacts in there for this or a relay maybe,
Tahnks for any help you can give in advanced guys.

Mine had a little problem after the cable was replaced. It wouldn't go into manual mode unless I jiggled the stick around some but then it worked OK. They said a clip wasn't on right or something like that. Sounds like yours may have somewhat different problem. Have you done anything to the console area lately?

mine does that too....i have just accepted it as "normal wear and tear"

Today I removed all the trim and tryed to locate the problem,I tried putting alchol down in the shifter base hoping to free up contacts nothing changed. I think Ill need to remove the whole console base and remove shifter. The guy at mazda said I needed the whole shifter it was 500$ with labor!!! I just went out a warrenty in january.

clarification: in manual mode it won't shift by itself?? i don;t have the triptronic tranny, so i'm a bit confused...i would think in manual mode you actually have to shift it yourself...? thanks

I was assuming he meant that even when he moved the shifter while in manual mode that it wouldn't shift up or down. I hope that was the case anyway.

okay, that makes more sense to me....that's not good?

hmm I think there's buttons on either front or back of the shifter that detect if you're shifting up or down. check the contacts there - perhaps the buttons aren't hitting or making contact?

Well a year later and still can figure this out, I removed the shifter and took it apart and found 2 micro switches that control the up and down shifting, they are mounted so nothing spilled on the shifter could get to them. Mine only upshifts and will not down shift so I switched the 2 micro switches and still only the up shift works wtf! I checked the wiring and its good to the connector where the main car wiring loom connects to shifter. I also tried the range sensor or TR sensor on the trans itself and that did'nt fix it either. now Im stumped what next is my pcm bad has anyone had this problem WTF should I do, the dealer said if it is the pcm it's covered under warrenty for 8/80k but if not I get to pick up the labor charge 89$ an hour.

The other thing that controls shifting is on the front of the tranny where the cable connects. There's some electrical part there too. I would suspect that before the PCM.

By "switched the 2 micro switches" do you mean:

A. Switched the wires from one switch to another
B. Unmounted the switches and swapped their positions, leaving the wires on.

I'm not quite clear on what you did, exactly.

Do you have a multimeter? Can you easily unplug the wires from the microswitches? If so, unplug and verify that the switch closes when it is pressed. Then verify that moving the shift causes the switch to close. If there's a rubber bushing or something similar in there that pushes the switch it may have been compressed enough so that the shifter does not reliably activate the switch. Also, it sounds like you already did this

I checked the wiring and its good to the connector

but just to be sure, you have verified that the wires going to the switches are not broken somewhere between the switch and the PCM?

As long as you have yours torn up...

Does pushing the knob to the right to go into manual mode activate a switch in the console, a linkage to the transmission, or both? I was daydreaming about putting paddle shifters on, and thought it would be a lot easier if all that was required were 3 switches (manual: on/off, paddle up, paddle down.) If there's a linkage to the transmission involved then the steering wheel mounted manual: on/off button isn't going to be sufficient.

Asmo, did you ever solve this problem with the manual shifting mode problems? Mine has the same problem. I took out the middle console and noticed that the metal part of one of the microswitches was broken off. The other one, was OK, but it does not want to shift up or down.

You mentioned that you replaced the microswitches. How did you do that? And how do you know which kind of microswitch you need?

I also asked the dealer and they want $100 just to have a look or $400 for a whole new shifter unit...

Im also curious to know of anyone figured a way to fix it or not. Im having a similar issue but with my protege!
