The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

Nate, I've still got all my HotWheels when I was a kid. I still buy them when I see one I like. I used to have them all on the wall in my apartment. Now they're just all chilling in boxes in the basement. Legos + HotWheels = mechanic. haha

I don't buy any but I always stop and look at them. Amber makes fun of me but it's allright. i still get one lego item at x-mas from my mom

^^^ Haha! Awesome. My sister and I send eachother a small Lego set for x-mas too. Tessa actually keeps an eye out for cool HotWheels for me. But they do look at us funny when going through the racks for any Mazdas. :)

hahahahah

i have an astronomical amount of lego's and hot wheels... those were my favorite things to play with when i was younger

sounds like you need to bring your neighbor to the cookout.

I ran it by him over the weekend and he sounded excited about it, but he's got 4 kids and his wife sleeps during the day because she works 3rd shift on the weekends, so I'm not 100% if he'll make it. I'm gonna stop over there later this week and ask him again.

Pure SEX right there!!

I wish I still had my lego's....I ordered a bunch several months ago to attempt to make a scale model of the protege, but I didn't have enough to finish it. Those things are crazy money to get. I had boxes and boxes of them when I was younger...

Hello from New Jersey....er I mean PA. Just went back thru the thread and y'all have been busy. lol I too would take a wagon anyday over a mini-van or suv, sadly my wife does not like wagons so we tend to butt heads from time to time. Jared used to play with hotwheels all the time, now he spends his time building things with Legos...I'm seeing a trend here. :) And yes when we go to any store with a toy dept, we always check out the hotwheels. Looking for something cool and t-hunts. :D

What do you guys think my options would be in getting this thing back on the road? I don't know too much about internal motor stuff, so I don't know how big this job would be. And actually, I'm not at all interested in any of the turbo stuff, from his previous threads, I trust he did a good job and all, I just think my best chance on reliability would be with a near stock setup (minus minor bolt ons)

Even though this is about 8 hrs from me, I didn't know if it'd be worth my while to maybe sell off some parts it comes with to recoupe travel/transport expenses, and then fix or replace the motor?

not a bad deal if you have a way to tow it. You could make up some of that money in the parts like he stated.

Our Trailblazer should tow it fine, as long as we brake early...no brake controller in there. lol and my parents neighbor has an open car trailer that we could borrow.

I'm more concerned with what it's going to take to fix, and I'm VERRRYYY weary about buying a car sight unseen. Pictures can be very deceiving. Also not fond of buying a modded vehicle already, because you never know what kind of job the owner did...but, it appears as if he's taken good care of the car.

N/A FS-DE is an okay motor, as several people have said. Not great, not horrible, it depends on the person's luck, I guess. Boosted FS-DE is a heartache/headache/disaster waiting to happen, imo. Yeah, I know, there are a couple people in here that track them, but there are many many stories about others blowing them up, too. It didn't get named the F(ragile)S-DE for no reason. Ctyracer is on his third fully built motor, afaik, and he's used only the best of the best parts, and they've still blown up. Now, he's going for big power, but I think it just points out something about the platform. There are much better platforms out there with buttloads more potential.

For a DD I think it's not a good idea. If you want it for a project and can do the work yourself, then that's cool. If you have to pay someone to work on it, it's going to be a biiiig money pit.

I'd worry more about the trans overheating (unless you have an auxiliary cooler) than the brakes. My friend tows her horse trailer with a trailblazer and it's on it's third trans...

I don't mean to be crapping on all your ideas, I just like to be realistic, and err on the side of caution. it sucks to get emotionally invested in something and have it blow up in your face.

Protege5 weighs about 2750-2800 lbs. A 2 wheel car dolly is the best way to pull one of these bad boys. My dad's got one (not for rent) and we've pulled cars that we probably shouldn't have with a 97 Jeep Cherokee. Most notable was the Saab 900 Turbo. That thing was a porker and a half.

No hard feelings, I appreciate all the info I can get on these cars, since I know very little about them at this point.

As I've said though, I have no interest in doing ANYthing "performance" wise other than maybe an intake and exhaust. And if the car I buy doesn't come with those, I really wouldn't be in any kind of hurry to buy them. I JUST want the car to be reliable, and get me where I need to go...while looking good of course. Haha

If there is still a question of reliability with these motors in stock form, then maybe I need to rethink my options here.

Like I said, I could drop a motor in it myself no problem, and after 2 years of being boosted, I have to imagine that motor is worn out anyway, reguardless if what happened to it recently.

That's the route I initially thought of, rent one down there and just use it one way. That way, my MPG's wouldn't be suffering on the ride down there. It's about $110 I believe...

Stock engines can be hit or miss as well. Phen has had no issues with his whereas MX-P5 had one go boom on him around 80K miles, IIRC (I have one of the pistons on my desk...lol). One issue I know of is that they tend to burn oil at higher mileages, mine has just started and trying to figure out where so I can get it fixed. I'd like to get over 300K one day. :)

Since you do body work maybe you could give me an idea of what it would take/cost to fix my rust issues? I'd like to do it myself if possible but I've never done body work so it is intimidating to me or if it wouldn't cost too much I'd pay a pro to do it.

Oh, I didn't follow you. So you'd sell off the turbo stuff and keep it N/A? I'd say you should be good, even with bolt ons. I've got an intake and full exhaust on mine, and it started burning oil before that, so I can't blame the mods. Now, mine's an older model motor, but not too much changed over the years besides a few more sensors and junk. Mine's never left me stranded anywhere and gets about 28mpg with my winter wheels flogging it about town. I average over 30 on the rare times that it sees highway. Mine makes some unhappy noises if it sees above 4k on the tach, so that's the main reason I don't like it, besides the lack of power and the burning oil. ;) Also, mine has a whopping 86k miles...

The one-way rate is higher than the 'around town' one, plus there may be a charge "per mile" so just make sure you've checked it out so there aren't surprises.

If I have to put a motor in one, I'll have to research companies that give the best warranties with their used motors. Other than that, I guess I'll just have to hope for the best! You can't go into a purchase expecting it to be a POS...lol

Get some pics of it and I'd he happy to give you my opinion!

Exactly...or, even if he wanted to sell all the parts off his self and sell me the car cheaper, that would be fine too.

You may be able to get a motor from Speed Circuit but not sure of their warranty and if that ever became the case you might want to consider swapping in the KL (v6)...which is what Lewis7789 is doing soon and others have done. I'm sure he could give you a rundown on what's he's spent so far for the swap.

As for my rust, why settle for pics, you can see it up close and personal this weekend. :/

Ok, ppl WTF I tried to put my new wheels on and guess what? I will tell you, my lug nuts are too big I have no room to put the lug wrench or even a socket into the holes. What now? New lugs, Jenny will s*** herself if I have to spend a pile of money on lug nuts! In case you couldn't tell I am pretty pissed right now! Help a brotha out here.
Never mind Summit to the rescue. Now a little more research to be sure that I get the right size/shape.

I've thought about that as well! A V6 would probably make it a fun little ride!

I have kind of a sour taste in my mouth about swaps though. Years ago, I had an old dual point civic hatch that I hydrolocked he motor on. I bought a multi point motor to swap into it, and from all the researching I did, it seemed SO simple to do...but we couldn't get it to work for me? Finally fed up, I found a CRX Si shell to drop the motor in. lol So, I'm kind of weary on messing with stuff like that now, another one of those "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" things. Although, in this car's case...it IS broke!

Touche!!
