Nate, I've still got all my HotWheels when I was a kid. I still buy them when I see one I like. I used to have them all on the wall in my apartment. Now they're just all chilling in boxes in the basement. Legos + HotWheels = mechanic. haha
sounds like you need to bring your neighbor to the cookout.

What do you guys think my options would be in getting this thing back on the road? I don't know too much about internal motor stuff, so I don't know how big this job would be. And actually, I'm not at all interested in any of the turbo stuff, from his previous threads, I trust he did a good job and all, I just think my best chance on reliability would be with a near stock setup (minus minor bolt ons)
Even though this is about 8 hrs from me, I didn't know if it'd be worth my while to maybe sell off some parts it comes with to recoupe travel/transport expenses, and then fix or replace the motor?
Our Trailblazer should tow it fine, as long as we brake early...no brake controller in there. lol and my parents neighbor has an open car trailer that we could borrow.
N/A FS-DE is an okay motor, as several people have said. Not great, not horrible, it depends on the person's luck, I guess. Boosted FS-DE is a heartache/headache/disaster waiting to happen, imo. Yeah, I know, there are a couple people in here that track them, but there are many many stories about others blowing them up, too. It didn't get named the F(ragile)S-DE for no reason. Ctyracer is on his third fully built motor, afaik, and he's used only the best of the best parts, and they've still blown up. Now, he's going for big power, but I think it just points out something about the platform. There are much better platforms out there with buttloads more potential.
For a DD I think it's not a good idea. If you want it for a project and can do the work yourself, then that's cool. If you have to pay someone to work on it, it's going to be a biiiig money pit.
Protege5 weighs about 2750-2800 lbs. A 2 wheel car dolly is the best way to pull one of these bad boys. My dad's got one (not for rent) and we've pulled cars that we probably shouldn't have with a 97 Jeep Cherokee. Most notable was the Saab 900 Turbo. That thing was a porker and a half.
As I've said though, I have no interest in doing ANYthing "performance" wise other than maybe an intake and exhaust. And if the car I buy doesn't come with those, I really wouldn't be in any kind of hurry to buy them. I JUST want the car to be reliable, and get me where I need to go...while looking good of course. Haha
If there is still a question of reliability with these motors in stock form, then maybe I need to rethink my options here.
That's the route I initially thought of, rent one down there and just use it one way. That way, my MPG's wouldn't be suffering on the ride down there. It's about $110 I believe...
Stock engines can be hit or miss as well. Phen has had no issues with his whereas MX-P5 had one go boom on him around 80K miles, IIRC (I have one of the pistons on my desk...lol). One issue I know of is that they tend to burn oil at higher mileages, mine has just started and trying to figure out where so I can get it fixed. I'd like to get over 300K one day.![]()
Since you do body work maybe you could give me an idea of what it would take/cost to fix my rust issues? I'd like to do it myself if possible but I've never done body work so it is intimidating to me or if it wouldn't cost too much I'd pay a pro to do it.
Oh, I didn't follow you. So you'd sell off the turbo stuff and keep it N/A? I'd say you should be good, even with bolt ons. I've got an intake and full exhaust on mine, and it started burning oil before that, so I can't blame the mods. Now, mine's an older model motor, but not too much changed over the years besides a few more sensors and junk. Mine's never left me stranded anywhere and gets about 28mpg with my winter wheels flogging it about town. I average over 30 on the rare times that it sees highway. Mine makes some unhappy noises if it sees above 4k on the tach, so that's the main reason I don't like it, besides the lack of power and the burning oil. Also, mine has a whopping 86k miles...
You may be able to get a motor from Speed Circuit but not sure of their warranty and if that ever became the case you might want to consider swapping in the KL (v6)...which is what Lewis7789 is doing soon and others have done. I'm sure he could give you a rundown on what's he's spent so far for the swap.
As for my rust, why settle for pics, you can see it up close and personal this weekend. :/
