The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

LOL, you guys...

Porting a rotary is roughly equivalent to swapping cams in a piston engine (changing intakeexhaust timing, opening, etc.). Streetporting is the "mild cam swap" for rotaries. I'm thinking any kind of porting isn't allowed in SP because it says swapping cams isn't allowed. The odd thing is they only mention bridge/peripheral porting (more aggressive porting) for the prepared classes.

I'm leading more towards sticking with NASA because I'd rather drive around a track than cones. I'd be perfectly happy with HPDE really because Mid-Ohio is about the only close track. You don't win anything in HPDE but it still costs money though - this is why the wife doesn't like it. I was looking at the NASA TT classes and it looks like I'd be somewhere in the TTD/TTC classes if I did everything I wanted. Probably wouldn't be competitive at all because I really don't want to turn this thing into a race-only car...

Maybe you should get another fc and make one of them your track car... ;)

my personal opinion regarding scca, etc stuff: i think it's stupid to refuse to mess with your car because you want to remain competitive in a class where you just drive around cones....i think you should do whatever the hell you want to do to your car and just drive it and have fun...and just try to beat your own lap times whether it's around cones or a track....

I have no problem with this. However, my wife, being the former finance major, has done a detailed cost analysis and states this is not cost effective as I won't be getting any return on my investments, LOL!

wow...that's crazy...
we've spent tons of money on our 3, but it's all for fun :)

looking for at TII as a track car? lol

Oh, ummmm, didn't Phen tell you? We sold it for scrap. We split the $13.74 and went to Chipotle. Sorry, Kev.

Nothing with cars has a return on investment... The best you get are limited assets that have ridiculous, front-loaded, depreciation schedules. It's only money, there for your enjoyment. Hell, I wouldn't be in school (for Business, Finance to boot...(lol2)) if it wasn't for the fact that I can make more money & therefore spend more money... Tell her whats up, haha.

Cold blooded.

Haha, I'm an engineer so there's no way I'd win in a financial argument.

She mainly just had issues with hyperdrive and HPDE as those are pretty much just driving around a track at high speeds with no (apparent) goal. She has no problem with SCCA Solo or NASA TT because at least there is some reward system (trophy, awards, etc.). Once I told her HPDE 1-4 were a stepping stone to TT she warmed up to that idea. Now to convince her the $360/weekend is worth it...

I'm in the market for some wheels. Yes, I know I'm impulsive and my mind changes constantly... But I just went through my monetary situation and I have a chunk of change that I had completely left out of my prior budget, so... I'm preferably looking for a 16x8, 17x7.5, or 17x8. Under 19 lbs (the lighter the better). I'm open to ideas, too. So let me know what you guys have or maybe what I should go get!

Haha, ya... $1440 a month is kinda steep. How about looking for some sponsors? Not sure if you could get much, but maybe? A local business, or something?

Honest opinion... 17x8 is difficult to stuff under a protege without rolling fenders and having the perfect offset + tire combo. I'd go with the 7.5's.

you need to tell her that this stuff gives you racing experience so you can become a famous race car driver and make lots of money :)

You know my suggestion :D

+1 and not to mention finding Dx8 wheels (where D=16,17) under 19 lbs (random requirement?) is going to be hard.

...and if you're going to run 8" wheels, please, oh please, do not run a tire any narrower than a 225 series!

My honest opinion: find a set of RPF1's in 16x8 in the +40 range (15.5 lbs) and 225 series tires. Should be aggressive for some flushness (and require fender modification), but not obnoxious or stretched. Just FWI, RPF1's only come in two "dish" configurations and aren't concave until 9" or wider not matter tha offset.

If you really want to try something funny, let's meet up sometime and you can try out one of the wheels off my RX-7...

Ya, it's not that bad I don't think, tho. Preferably I want a 16x8... But not many wheels are made in a 16x8; at least the ones in my price range. (lol2)

Ya, I'm not sure if I want to go with fd's, tho. A month ago, I would have in a heartbeat. But I've honestly been annoyed with how a few people have been whoring their fd's around the forum lately and preaching about how you can't get a better wheel and all that jazz. Sorta turned me off of them. So, we'll see. It really just depends on what else I find...

You know my suggestion :D

Ya, finding a decent set of 16x8's period isn't easy, lol. But, I can get some cheap 16x8's @ +40 that weigh between 16-18 lbs, if I wanted. But I'm not 100% sold on the style & quality of Drag wheels. Any of you guys have any opinions on Drag wheels? They are cheaper 1 piece cast wheels. They have a few decent options...

Also, I have 2 225/45/17" tires (Hankook evo k110, brand new) that I will use if I get 17's, but honestly I want some 16x8's if I can find some. I'll have to run 215 in the rear, tho... 225 will rub too much unless I do a serious fender pull.

I love RPF1's, but they are a little high in the price range for me to buy new. Maybe if I came across a set used.

What kinda wheels are on your fc? I checked your build thread, maybe I missed it.... Did you get a new set of rpf1's for the rx-7 after you sold your set from the p5?

No... not really. Marlon is running some pretty big meats on his car.
