The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

When I looked I did see some differentiation between the Coupe and the Sedan versions. But nothing mentioning RWD vs AWD. I dunno.

Were you running Mustang wheels btw?

The B class 2004 STi weighs 4000+ lbs too

So does the GT-R. But the STi and the GT-R were built as performance vehicles (let's not debate making a 4000 lb race car, it's the dumbest s*** ever, I know). The G37x was built as a luxo barge. You can fix some of that with suspension, but again, we're talking 2500-3000 lb cars limited to the same wheel and tire width as the G37. In an unlimited tire / wheel class, the gap may be narrower, but that restriction will kill the heavier car every time.

Ah, I didnt see that at first, as I was primarily focused on ST stuff, but now I do see the differentiation of D stock Coupe and F stock sedan. But under the STX category, all I see is the previous gen G35 listed.

Infiniti G37 isnt listed anywhere in ST_ though the 350Z falls under STR and the platform-shared G35 is STX (one class back)

My guess is the AWD coupe version of the G37 is currently "flying under the radar" and will similarly fall one class behind its cousin, the 370Z in ASP), into BSP or STU once it gets noticed.

I was.... 28.5 pounds of All American Muscle (headbang) My new LW rims should arrive sometime this week :)

Were you running Mustang wheels btw?

Why? Was I driving like a maniac? (sssh)

You should beat him even especially if you are looking at PAX times in a street tire class. Just means you are leaving a little time here and there in the corners.

Nah I was just curious. They looked really good, but at that weight I dunno ;)

Are you going to make it out to more events?

They looked really good...

Thanks! They were the wheels that came with the car, but once I found out how much they weighed, I looked into a separate set of lightweight wheels... Which should be arriving this week and running just about half the weight. Hopefully they will give me a wee bit more grip being lighter.

I hope to run much of the rest of the season as I really enjoy autocrossing...the problem is I don't know diddly squat about all thentricks of the trade. Things like controlling tire temp, getting the most of my tires and the finer points of smooth vs fast. After watching the pros Sunday it would seem I am pushing too hard. My times kept getting lower but my tires squeal quite a bit. The fast folks seem to be more smooth and less tire squeally ; unless that was due to r compound tires? Idk. I just know that I don't know a whole lot about car set up and getting the advantages, you know?

^ is your name Ben? 23 STR? your times are very similar to mine, my tires were squealing quite a bit but I'm pushing the car harder every time, and they aren't the best tire for autox (conti extreme contact DW). What tires are you running? The wheels do look good, are they really mustang wheels or look a likes?

what I've noticed compared to the second run group is that most of them run either slicks or really good tires like R-S3s and the like, so they get less squeal than we do. Marc wasn't able to push my car further, maybe with more seat time but he adapted pretty fast to it so I feel happy about that, looks like its close to the limit with those tires. I've been playing with tire pressures and I think I've found the sweet spot for the contis, that actually gave me better mileage on the street, and every time I'm out there I feel like I'm driving smoother. Having Marc drive the car really helped as I rode with him the whole time and was able to compare how smooth he was on some corners, carrying more speed.

I would consider having Marc co-drive with you, I'd like to do it again, Will too, they have more experience with meoters. If only I could get Bill out there...

Lighter won't improve your grip but it will improve your acceleration, particularly because it is unsprung weight.

Smooth is definitely faster. The stickier tires do seem to squeal less, and R-compounds even less than that. A lot of the guys running in the "Pro" class were in the stock classes and therefore could be running r-comps.

I don't worry too much about setup with the exception of tire pressure. I personally don't care about winning, just want to have a good time. Once you get more experience and start playing around with car setup more you will notice that certain things make the car feel better or worse.

Here's my best run of the day which was a 54.455. After watching the video I think I definitely could've gone faster :(

Sorry about the crappy sound, something broke off inside my camera and is rattling around...

Koni Yellows, OE valving with 375# (F), 250# (R) springs/GC sleeves. Modified NB top hats, FCM bump stops.
Enthuza Car NA racer exhaust and high flow cat
15x7 6UL w/ RE-11.
NA8 Brakes with XP10/8. (Way too much for autocross)

That's about it for the performance stuff. I have the seats and the lightweight battery that probably shaves 20-30 lbs if that as well.

OK, can't help comparing my times with yours. My best time was 56.376, don't know how your suspension compares to mine, tires are way better and Marc was with me so we were both (Marc and I) carrying an extra 230 lbs +\-

I had a passenger for the first 4 runs and when he got out I immediately picked up 1.2s on the very next run. I can't say if that was because of the extra weight, me getting more comfortable with the course, or a bit of both.

My suspension is adequate at best. I need sway bars bad, there's so much body roll that I was scraping my front splitter on the ground on the tighter turns. But the tires are definitely the biggest difference. Once you put those A6's on you'll be able to carry more speed, brake later, accelerate harder, and generally have more fun. :)

I'm also itching for sway bars, the car has a lot of body roll compared to the 3, but I'm doing my best at being patient and pushing the car as is. Going from contis to A6s is not the best transition though, but I don't know if I'll be able to get an in between tire

What is your goal before you switch to the A6? In my mind it's going to dramatically change the car and therefore I would get on that tire as soon as possible so that I could learn the car and the tire together.

The main goal is to take the car to the limit, and know what the car does\reacts there so I know how to correct it and not spin out as I have (at the autox). I want to move on to TT eventually, so I want to be able to control it before I drive it at high speeds on the track. Everyone says using the A6s (or any slick) will make me faster, but will also mask any errors I'm making and I wouldn't be taking the car to its limit. Also, when the A6s let go, there's a smaller chance you can get the car back, and if I don't know what it's gonna do at the limit it would be harder to control. so most likely I'd end up on the wall.

I had more experience with the 3, and using the conti slicks on it was awesome, but RWD is still new to me. I can make it drift a bit on corners and control it, like the back sweeper and the short right sweeper from Sunday, but I still can't drift the car at will and fully control it. I want to have better control before I go balls out.

Can't wait for tomorrow. I get to fit my AWR coilovers on and take off the stock Tokico struts with lowering springs. Should be just a "little" improvement for autoX :) Then out comes the drivetrain. Probably not all going to happen tomorrow, but it will be one step closer to haveing her back on the road.

Thevery first autox I went to I rode with a guy in a green miata from the north coast miata club. He wanted me to keep riding with him since I guess I was an excellent ballast and he was picking up a second lol!

Ha that's funny. It does change the balance of the car. I notice it more on the track though.

Nitto NT-1's might fit the bill for ya
