The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

Find a used road bike on CL. Just make sure it is WSD (women specific design). The geometry of the bike is built for ladies. But honestly, in terms of fitness, I'm so happy I bought a semi-nice bike. The $550 was worth every penny this summer, and for many more to come! The lightness over a crossover/hybrid bike makes for a better workout in my opinion==you just don't get discouraged.

The best part is the shifting mechanism compared to a cheapy walmart mountain bike, although I'm sure top end hybrids are very similar. I love my sti shifters

Truth!

I paid over $400 for my Trek 7.2FX a few years ago, and it's labeled as a "performance hybrid". Super light, and shifts awesome! We got my wife a $80 Huffy from Target, and it didn't last 3 towpath rides before it wouldn't shift for s***. lol

I love this thing, it's so unique looking.

It's got the craziest front suspension design. The front wheel can actually bend under, so you can just ride right at a curb and it'll go over it no problem. It's not the best for descending, though.

I've still got my old GT mountain bike from 10 years ago. I beat the poo out of it and it's still pretty nice. I just don't have the energy to ride after work anymore. I are old.

That's a sweet looking bike, Wes. But it looks heavy as hell. Is it?

We should have a Mazda bike ride day before it gets too cold out!

Loading bikes is tricky business! lol

As little as my bike weighs, under 20lbs, I completely jacked UP my back loading it into the bed of my truck somehow, and I was only 23 at the time?! Just twisted the wrong way or something, and it sent me to the ground. Sidelined me from work for a few days...I had never been in so much pain!

I have an old GT Pantara with one of the first gen rock shocks on it. It was an expensive bike at the time $700~ I still use it but the rake on it kills my hands after a while. I would be up for a ride sometime soon.

let's do it!!!!!

I like it.

I am a little bummed that I never took my Redline Monocog 29er out on the trails this year. Talk about a mountain bike with no frills. No suspension, one cog front, one cog rear. Just about as light at my road bike. I wanted to do a disc brake conversion on it this year but never got around to it. Perhaps next year.

the point of a beater IMO is cheap transportation, unless its threatening the ability of the car to drive, there is no point in putting money into it... and if the repair is too expensive you can generally scrap the car and not lose out much money

Post pics if you get the Volvo!! I'll be jealous!

We always have "beaters" for winter/dd...our prelude is Sean's beater...we plan on keeping it for a while, so he's fixed all sorts of stuff in it. Put money into something you like/enjoy so you don't have to do this search over again next winter!

well I don't have a lot to work with so I would be forced to do essential stuff only, we'll see how it looks

Yeah, make sure it runs and stops and a wheel isn't going to fall off!

Research part prices before buying, too. You don't want to buy a beater that you can't afford or can't find parts to fix it...we can't find certain parts for the honda because it's so old!!

Another awesome part about beaters is that if something isn't working, and there is a potential that you'll have to replace it, you can always try to fix it before spending money. Dad and I did that on his Volvo winter beater last year. Rebuild the fuel pump and fuel sending unit assembly. Saved $220. Of course, he crushed the car 2 months later when it failed to start at the recycling center...
