The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

Yah, I was looking at the pictures and was wondering why there was so much body roll there and not at the Gueaga Lake event. So I started looking around and noticed that I only have 1 corner of my suspension out of the 4 is connected to a sway bar (I had the rear on in the pics), but I might have broken that rear swaybar clamp then too. Oh well, all is fixed and ready to go for this weekend. I have solo driving school on Saturday to get some extra pointers and event #2 on Sunday.

Well, if the rear was goofed up, you wouldn't be tri-poding.

Oh and Phen the suspension consist of Tokico HP struts, Tokico lowering springs, AWR trailing arms, AWR rear swaybar w/ adjustable endlinks. The only things I have left to change for STX is Coilovers, AWR lateral arms, adjustable front endlinks, and 3 point sub brace. If I don't get her repainted next year she will then be a suspension beast.

Ah yes. Those springs aren't very stiff. They do the job, but that's as far as it really goes.

rally2003, if you are worried about ride quality then its probably not worth putting in coilovers yet. They don't have to necessarily be awful, but definitely with spring rates high enough to give a benefit over the stock suspenion, there will be some more harshness. If you weren't getting the body roll with the swaybar connected that should be enough for local autocross. A lot of people have done well with stock suspension on the Mazdaspeed and MP3.

Completely unrelated to that: I put in my new rear springs and lowered the car an inch today. The ground clearance at the frame rail is 5 1/2 inches, so I might go another half an inch, but not decided yet.

Oh, and I think I screwed up the stretch on my tires:

Hellafunctional FTW Bill what were the spring rates you recommended for me? I am ordring stiffer springs, just can't remember what you suggested. Thanks

All of my spring rates are in lb/in.
You will have to modify these numbers a little based on your driving style. If you are not comfortable with a car that wants to snap around on you at turn-in, then staying within 50 #/in between front and rear would be best. I would suggest something like 400 front, 450 or 500 rear, taking into account that you still drive it on the street. If you are not driving it on the street, I would say something around 500 front and 550 rear.
For reference, my car is now at 500 front and 850 rear, but I have the wing to keep me a little more stable in high speed corners and I like a lot of oversteer. I was at 500 front and 450 rear and I was trying to use the AWR rear swaybar too much to get the oversteer I wanted. For some reason I thought I had 550s in the rear and couldn't understand why I wasn't getting as much oversteer as I wanted.

edit: the above is also assuming you don't have a non-adjustable aftermarket rear swaybar.

I just pulled a pair of 450 #/in (2 1/2" ID, 8" length) from the car that I would sell cheap ($50 for the pair) if you want them.

I'm confused a bit. Aren't the tires stretching out instead of in? Does not compute.

Hoosiers are designed to be a little cantilevered off the edge of the rim. The seat is almost 1/2 inch in from the sidewall of the tire. I have the 225/45/15 tire which is a 9.8 inch wide tire, but it is designed to fit on rim widths from 7 to 8.5 inch. Mine are 8 inch.

I was just joking about it because of the slammed, hella whatever, looks like $%@# people.

Oh I know I was trying to make a funny. I obviously failed. The car looks amazing man. I'd love to see it sometime in the near future.

That's cool. Its always hard to tell on a forum.

Thanks saying nice things about my car. I am for sure doing Grattan in June, Mid Ohio in July, August and September. And I need to find some small events before Grattan and between the other events to get the car dialed in.

The weekend after NASA at Grattan is a Porsche Club event at Nelson Ledges. Or Chin Motorsports (May 30-31) and PCA (June 3-5) will both be at Mid-Ohio before Grattan if you're just looking for open track time.

How are the Chin Motorsports events? I've been out with PCA before and they were well run. One of those MidOhio events might work out really well for me.

dunno if your willing to drive out but BeaveRun has events on may 21st (scca time trials) and then the 28th (flat out day)

Do you know what the cost is for the PCA event? For some reason they don't have it posted on their site.

$375 w/o an instructor and $425 with an instructor, for all three days. I think you have to go to MotorsportReg.com to see the prices.

Morning folks.

Marlon, are you still on the stock rear sway bar for the MSP?

I ran about 1 1/2 miles yesterday, my legs are sore. Yesterday I was thinking how easy it was and I should do it everyday, now I'm thinking every other day til my body catches up.

Haha yeah... that happened to me while in China. I was looking for crap to do so I went for a couple runs... then the rest of the week, I hated myself.
