The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

Hey Sho, just heard on the radio that tax returns for students are delayed because of some changes in the forms... some fields were not supposed to be left blank...

And I stay away from Shell as well, don't get the best mileage from them but I'll take it over GE. I wish Sunoco brought back 94.

Thanks for the heads up!

And regarding the sunoco 94; same here.

I get bad worse gas mileage with GE but shop at the GE near work so I'll save up my fuel perks and use them there. I'll be sticking to Sunoco as well. I've always heard BP was bad gas (before the gulf spill) but never had any trouble with it and got pretty good mileage. Then again, I've been using 93 since my first car, to me it's worth a piece of mind getting the good stuff.

The STi requires 93.

I use higher octane stuff (91-93) in the Miata because of the advanced timing.

The Smart requires 93 due to high compression. There's multiple discussions on the forums about gas quality and burnt valves. Apparently bad gas causes our injectors to clog, which in turn causes the car to run lean, which in turn causes burnt exhaust valves by 24k (coincidentally when the warranty is up).

Notice Sunoco is not on the list. The only station I've found on the list is a Shell, and it's out of my way. So I've done what others have said has worked. If I fill up anywhere other than Shell (usually at Sheetz), I put a few ounces of injector cleaner in before filling up. You guys know I drive like a nut, I'm surprised I haven't had any issues yet, especially since I think I leaned it out by doing cold air + exhaust. I've got 30k now.

I use BP in the monte carlo because it's on the way to work and my mom always did. The only thing I've ever heard is if you're using BP stick with BP because their detergents don't mix well with others. In the Escape we use Shell 99% of the time because that's what Kroger's has for thier fuel perks.

Anybody else sad Top Gear is over? The Africa stuff was cool, but they could have made more episodes with all the money they blew on that special.

What!? Like OVER over? Or just this season over? I don't have cable but I watch the older ones on Netflix every night during supper.

It's not over they're just on break for a couple months. They will be back in June-July.

It's funny. All the gas myths people believe.

Kinda hard when I consistently get less miles per tank... and this is not over 1 tank alone. I know driving is different every single day, but the results have been lower for me in every car I've had. Add to that the fact that a few GE stations received gas mixed with diesel... yeah, that's a chance I'm not willing to take.

List said myths and proof of them being myths and maybe we won't believe?

I don't know... I just didn't want to shell out thousands in motor work so I'm doing the "just in case" method with the injector cleaner. I could give a s*** about mileage.

Almost all gasoline comes from the same refineries so ignoring the "detergents" and other "additives" individual companies add later it's all the same. 87 octane is 87 octane and so on. The only advantage you might see is using gas with lower levels of ethanol in it. Obviously this "GE" case is an exception because someone screwed up. Running 93 octane in a car that doesn't need it is a waste of money. The ECU will not increase boost or advance timing if it detects higher octane gasoline so you're paying more money for the same performance/fuel economy. Adding injector cleaner is also a waste. It made sense way back when with leaded gasoline, gasoline quality was all over the place and we relied on carbs and poorly designed fuel injectors. Now injectors are designed to better handle impurities and gasoline standards are much higher. The general rule of thumb is to stick with whatever's cheapest from one of the major fuel companies.

I don't mean to be an asshole, but I fail to see what the myth is. I also fail to see why I should stop paying 4 cents more per gallon @ Sunoco vs GE or Shell when I have proven to get between 30 and 50 more miles per tank. 30 to 50 miles for 64 cents a week (per tank) seems worth it to me, unless I'm missing something.
