The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

Haha, nooo....

I want to fix the rust spots and for ~$400 I can plastidip the whole car. I got a quote from The Russians for $350 for just the front bumper. I can plastidip right over the primer too. I am still undecided about matte white or black, but no outrageous colors for me.

Jake has a friend, Ryan, who dipped his MS6 matte white and from the cell phone pics I saw it looked pretty good.

But I understand you're an ex-bodyshop guy so your eyes are trained much better than the rest of us. You'll cringe when you see it, I'm sure. Just like you did when you saw my clearcoat on my CF hood. haha

i might just cry if you plastidip your ms6 white

Plastdip white/black is better than Titanium/rust. ;)

Besides, it's Plastidip is removable if it turns out to look like a turd.

Why do you hate Plastidip, Will? (I think I've asked you this once before actually...)

This Bimmer is plastidipped white. Looks pretty good, IMHO. I would paint other parts and trim black to break up the space.

if you use ALOT of coats with an air compressor and actual spray gun, ive seen some plastidipped cars that turned out pretty good... but thats alot of effort and alot of things most people dont have haha

id rather see you vinyl wrap the car, its a little bit more but looks alot better BUT i cant say anything cause the thought of Plastidipping my 3 in white has been being thought of more and more often
especially since i want to fix the rust that i have so that i can prolong the body from wrotting as long as i possibly can on that, in order to reach the goal i have of that car making it to 250k or more haha

Yeah, I think we had this exact conversation before. I just think that it's overused for the wrong stuff... It doesn't look good to me when people paint their whole car with it... Or paint the roof with it... Wheels aren't terrible because I can see the advantage of doing that, but I would never do wheels either.

That said, I'm going to use it on my STi to cover some silver window trim that bothers me. ;)

guess since Evan is gonna go the Plastidip route, ill go the Fender Flare route to fix my rust issues, cant have 2 cars in the same area both rocking Plasti-dip paintjobs hahaha

^^^ Haha, doo eet! But you can't really go back to stock too easily once you go that route. lulz

But that's why I shouldn't do white because I don't want to steal Ryan's thunder with his white MS6. And I don't think I have enough HP to pull off a matte black. haha

theres not but at this point there isnt much sellability in my car... 136k miles, rusted rear quarters (flares would allow me to cut almost all of the rust out)
and since it was in an accident some would shy away, im better running the old girl into the ground than i would be selling it haha
and with that outlook, flares would make sense, removes rust and who cares about stock cause im likely running it til she dies haha

ill see what all happens as the year goes on, first things of importance this year are my roomates wedding and trying to find a house that i like (if not i guess ill just rent for another 6 months to a year)

after those are both taken care of then ill fiddle with a few things on the car to keep her up and running well

id grab these flares, they arent for our cars, BUT luckily im friends with the guy and im sure i can have him ATLEAST tell me how to get them fitted properly haha

Is the plasti dip going to stop the rusting? I would rather have sheet metal tig welded and done right to stop the rust.

No, nothing stops rust. Duh-duh-duh! (Que dramatic music)

But I would sand it down on the hood, bondo it smooth, primer then Plastidip the whole thing. Then when it comes back do the process all over again. As for the quarter panels, what if I just cut out the lip? Josh, any input there? I will need to roll my fenders anyway so I was just wondering why not cutting them then sealing them really well, then Plastidip?

Again, just thinking outloud, I'm always open to suggestions.

I don't think Plasti Dip can do anything for the rust, other than mask it. I think you should cover rust spots with that black tar-like stuff that some people use for rust-proofing truck beds before applying plastidip. Plastidip ends up being a wrap when it dries up anyway, and wrapping the rust spots won't stop it...

Keep in mind primer spots may be a different color than the rest of the dip over the silver. I've also never tried to plastidip over primer, I dunno if that would be any different as far as adhesion and removal.

I saw a youtube video of Plastidip over primer, it still came off, though it was harder to peel since the surface is more rough. But I think 6 coats of Plastidip should cover any differences in color, no? Especially with a gray car to begin with.

I told my wife last Saturday I wanted a carbon fiber hood on my white 6 and she basically told me hell no that is ugly. But my stock hood is extremely chipped and has Rudy developing in those spots. I also have bad rust under the hood where the shocks mount. I don't know what to do with mine.

I want to plasti-dip the RX-7 orange. For <$500 and a few hours of my time I can get a decent, reversible coating. Even the cheapest Maaco paint jobs can't match that.
