The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

With owning a house it's not just the mortgage you have to worry about. For example, I went from an apartment to owning a house and the whole concept of maintaining a yard was new to me and I didn't have any of the necessary tools. That's a pretty big expense. Depending on where you live there could also be H.O.A. fees, not to mention property tax. Not trying to dissuade anyone but there's a lot of things to consider.

^ i know what you are saying but ive been looking around and am hoping to buy this summer, ive calculated mortgages around me with property tax, and homeowners insurance into what the monthly payment would be... im still looking at getting into a house for about 100 bucks more than my rent

its not as unattainable as some might think

and yes i know all the potential costs that come with it, my parents used to buy and flip houses or fix them up to rent them out...

My buddy recently bought a condo in Copley, it's super nice. But yeah HOA fees, insurance make the monthly payments way more than you would expect.

I could afford a small house perhaps, but then I wouldn't have any money left over for race car parts. I only make about $2200 a month. Thus I'll wait until Tessa get a job and all my bills will get split in half. I'm cheap like that. haha

But I want to set up a garage once and for all, or hang that painting without knowing in the back of my head I will have to take it down and move again in a year or two. But having a 30 year mortgage scares the crap out of me. I don't have any debt or credit cards and all my cars are cheap and were paid off in a year or two. I can't imagine buying a new car and being $25k in debt. That would mess with my anxiety fo sho.

Ugh, money. I hate money.

Yeah I couldn't imagine being only $25k in debt after buying a new car either ;)

Evan, that's about what I take home also, and depending on what you are looking for, that's not hard to find a house in your price range.

We were planning on looking this summer, but things got expedited recently, and hope to find one in the next few months.

Haha, truth. I think my sister paid that much for her new Subie and it's a base model. I'm old and cheap.

Holy crap, Will. I just googled an STi price. Wowie wow. Haha! I'm so cheap!

30 year loan is easy to commit to, in that time span you can refinance for a lower payment, do a recast for a lower payment, move to a new house and use what you've paid as equity towards the new one. With rates as low as they are right now it's not like the interest is going to have huge effects on your payment either.

I make less than you and I got approved for $115,000 mortgage on top of a huge car payment

Agreed, but when I started my house hunting I factored in property tax and home owner's insurance as costs. Most of the places I found around here come out to about 50-75 dollars less a month than my current rent with property tax and homeowner's insurance included.. Even with the increase in electric bill would offset the savings from renting. Now with renting you really don't have to pay for anything that breaks, except with mine where you have to pay certain fees for major appliances breaking.

yeah you know he is old when he thinks 25k buys you much of a car these days... LOL

You can get a V6 Camry or a really nice I4 Camry for about 25k. Heck, you can get that Veloster Turbo for under 25k.

Plus, right now rates are as low as you will ever see. I will see tonight what I get approved for (hopefully). I passed the credit check atleast to get the appointment with the loan officer.

When my partner and I were house shopping in late 2010 we were approved for $528k (lulz)

On a side note, I probably will be doing this to my extra AWR oil pan :)
