The Ohio Auto-X and Track Event chat thread

I know I have only done one track day at Mid Ohio with AI but I was really frustrated with the lack of direction and awareness of their surroundings that the people in the Novice group have. They have no concern for the people that are faster than them. I hardly every got the okay to pass or they would get pissed when I would ride them really hard hoping they will see me and give me the good to go to pass

Next time that happens, just back off and let them get ahead. You'll have a better time than trying to pass them or waiting for a signal. Also, you don't know how they behave under pressure, so you'll avoid causing an accident.

Driving on a race track is a tough thing, especially for newbies. This is one of the many reasons every novice should have an instructor. Novices simply do not have the skill and awareness to keep track of what is going on behind them. They typically have their hands full with where they are going haha. The instructor could watch the mirrors for them and let them know when they need to let people by.

I also think it is tough when it comes to 1-day track events for novices. It takes most, if not the entire, day just to get comfortable in the car going fast, learn the proper line, and the other important things about driving on the track safely. If there was a second or third day to the event, the novice group would flow much better as everyone gets more comfortable with performance driving and the other group members.

That said, you should try to come out to the 3-day NNJR PCA event May 16-18. The club offers wonderful instruction, is incredibly affordable, and is generally a great group to run with.

This concept is one reason why I've been on the fence about even considering one of their events.

Would you be in the novice group? If so, I agree with you and wouldn't do an event with them. Otherwise, come on out and have a good time.

Yeah, I would be. At least I'd feel more comfortable there until an instructor told me that I didn't need to be.

I probably should have been in Novice for the last event last year I went to especially with the rain, but after a ride along with Marc and Pablo I felt a lot better. Would probably help if I wasn't running 3 crap tires and a snow tire though too ;) Had a blast running under 2 minute lap times though with crap what I was using.

Just a quick update! We are planning to have our first Cars and Coffee drive the 2nd Sunday in May. First AutoX at Lorain the 3rd Sunday.
Please DO NOT use the old PayPal account for membership renewals. We will do this through Racerslane.com like we always have and we will have CHEAPER pricing. So save yourself some money and please wait. I will get the new information to our web guy as soon as I sort a few details out and he will update Racerslane.com. As soon as it is ready, we will post both here and on our website the membership details.

Looks like I'll be racing in the Alero Sunday. Some point are better than no points. Maybe I'll get lucky and be up against a bunch of newbs :)

A quick FYI for all of you that will be attending the HPDE event @ Mid-Ohio, next Monday. We do have 3 garages for Mazda Owners and dedicated Mazda Only Parking as well. Marc and I will be heading down next Sunday, to take the RX-7 down to get the car through tech, drop off tires, etc.

We did find out that there will be 28 Novices and about 20 instructors at this event....they're will be class room instruction for the first time novices without any track experience at experience at all. Should be a fun day and looks like the weather will cooperate as well

May have a few showers in the afternoon and evening with a high of 67

If you and/or Marc don't mind marking off a spot for me that is large enough for the box truck/trailer somewhat near you guys I'd appreciate it! We will be rolling in on Monday morning.

In preparation for this weekend (I'm going to Mid-Ohio on Friday for an open lapping day with PCA in addition to the AI day on Monday), I replaced the rotors, brake pads (Carbotech XP12), bled all the brakes with some ATE super blue and changed the oil on the STI:

So pretty!

My OE pads were all worn very strangely, with both edges worn much more than the rest of the pad:

And my front ones were almost gone! I'm very glad I changed everything because I doubt I'd make it through 2 days with these:

the pad isn't worn , it comes from the factory like that.
we will save you a space next to my trailer, I will block it off with cones in the morning.

Thanks Marc.

And I didn't know that about the OE pads! Thanks! Do you have any idea why they come like that?

not sure I wanna go down on Sunday after the autox, that's a lot of driving

I was thinking the same thing, but it does make Monday morning soooo much easier so I'll roll down after our auto-x, Peaches. I'll buy ya a Mountain Dew for the drive.

Really looking forward to the auto-x Sunday and track day Monday. Speaking of brake pads, I installed my new HP+ pads in the rear only to find the year old caliper from Autozone is leaking brake fluid from the piston. Balls. Gotta replace that tonight. But good thing I noticed it now than this weekend. Whew!
