Switching to a spin-on filter

I have a spare oem spin-on at home. I'll measure it and let you know what it comes out at. The Pure One 20195, Mobil1 M1-205 and the Bosch 3421 sound pretty damn close.

Okay, I'm a little confused.
For the 2.3L Mz3 we use the L301-14-311 or the L301-14-310?

The one that I ordered from my local dealer had L301-14-311 on the part label. Haven't installed it yet, but it looks to be the correct piece.

The one ending in "311" is the right part. The part number has changed from the info that was first posted.

According to the Mazda6 Tech article, it's 310. I ordered mine directly from the part numbers on that article but it's a couple years old and Mazda might have superceded the part number. Either one may work.

TomH,
Once you do the install, let us know for sure.
Thanks

Yeah, they list them for the 2.0 Mazda3 but it's not the same size as the OEM filter. The 3 and the Pro have the same size filter base but the 3 is longer. Check it out, though. They may have wised up.

IIRC, I didn't use any gasket sealer. It's a crush-type gasket, so none should be needed.

I don't recall the torque specs but if nobody else jumps in here, I'll look them up for you when I get home.

Just fyi, the folks at Mazda6Tech made a little how-to (with pictures) if you want to have a look.

are these genuine mazda parts?
would changing to a spin on mess with engine warranty?
would dealers do this install?

Another interesting note on this subject. Just out of curiousity, I checked to see what oil filters fit the 04-05 Ford Focus with the Duratec 2.3, which is the same engine as our 2.3s, minus the VVT system.

Turns out that the Focus 2.3 comes from the factory with a spin on filter, and it's the exact same one that fits on the 04-05 Mazda 2.0 engines. Ford obviously felt that their 2.3 didn't need a cartridge setup, and I can't see Mazda's addition of the VVT system to be the reason why they chose it. Vehicles from Honda, Toyota, Mitsubishi and Nissan with engines that have some sort of VVT system also come from the factory with spin-ons.

Based on this information, I feel extremely confident that this modifcation will work 100%, and be invisible to the operation of the vehicle. Except for maybe when you go to change the oil, it will be much less messy and way simpler. Not to mention the cheaper, more abundant filter selection available.

This cartridge thing is (jerkit) . I just bought my 3, and it's almost time for the 1st change - The chain stores don't stock - so I looked online, and luckily found this forum. Thanks for all of the great info. I hope I can get a few questions answered so I can quickly proceed:

1. Same adapter for 2.0L and 2.3L - exactly the same part - is this correct?

2. 310 and 311 = exactly the same - correct? Anyone know why P/N changed? (dunno)

3. Does Focus use adapter, or is it cast as part of block? If adapter - is it same P/N as Mazda? Is it available @ Ford dealers? Cost?

4. Where are the best sites to order adapter, gasket, and spin on (spin) filter? I quickly went to mazdastuff.com, but it says to call to order - I can do that later, but was wondering if other places had better deals.

5. What filter is everyone going with? - I've seen:

- Stock LF10-14-302
- Pureone 10241 (3.5"), 20195 (4.75")
- Mobil 1 M1-102 (3.5"), M1-205 (4.75")
- Bosch 3330 (3.5"), 3421 (4.75")
- Amsoil LF503 (size=?)
- Pureone P20064 (size=?)
- Motocraft FL-910 (size= ?)

Do the 4.75" long filters contact the splash shield, or are they succeptible to ground contact?

Which has the best price for filter?

1. Same adapter for 2.0L and 2.3L - exactly the same part - is this correct?
No, you have to use a 2.0L adapter. The 2.3L adapter is the same thing you already have.

2. 310 and 311 = exactly the same - correct? Anyone know why P/N changed? (dunno)

Should be the same. Have your local stealership look up the number for the 2.0L and see what the current incarnation is.

(dunno)

I got mine right from the dealer. They gave me wholesale price and I didn't have to pay any shipping.

5. What filter is everyone going with?

I'm using Mazda filters for now. When I run out, I'll switch to Motorcraft.

Do the 4.75" long filters contact the splash shield, or are they succeptible to ground contact?

No.

I got my factory filters for like $6. Mobil1 filters are about $10-$12. Motorcraft will probably be around $5.
Be careful which one you buy. Some manufacturers just use the Protege 2.0L filter which is shorter than the Mazda3 2.0L filter.

Thanks GW2K!

I called mazdastuff (Austin, TX) - they quoted $49.98 for the adapter, and $9.20 for the gasket. I said (gtfo)!! Grey Ghost posted on 2/25 that he got the parts for $38/$2.94 from mazdastuff.

I'm in Michigan - which dealer did you go for the parts? How'd you get wholesale.

Thanks.

I've bought all my parts from Sesi in Ypsi. I developed a rapport with the service/parts manager Chris (and bought a LOT of crap) and he gave me the wholesale price.
I haven't bought anything in a while, though. Even I might not be able to get the same deals anymore.
It couldn't hurt to ask.
Where do you work?
Maybe you could bs your way through a business-to-business sale?

Where in Michigan are you? Fill out your profile!! (thumb)

Just thought I'd update on this. Changed my oil today and used the Motorcraft FL910 filter. It is identical in every way, shape and form to the Mazda LF10-14-302. (cabpatch)

That's more than I can say for the Mobil 1 and Purolators, both of which are shorter and appear to have a smaller diameter gasket.

also read my precautionary notes on converting to the spin-on filter here:
http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showpost.php?p=2220812&postcount=3

it is still advantagous to convert to the spin-on filter because there's greater margin of error... the cartridge type uses 2 o'rings (one for the drain bolt, and one for the filter cover itself), if you improperly install any of the parts (such as under or over tightening, and/or misaligning the o'ring seals), then it may lead to engine failure from oil leaks or improper oil pressure

I'm not sure I'm buying into the statement that you linked
TheMAN said:
so I converted it to the spin-on (conventional) type... the thing is when you convert over, you need to run 5W30 oil instead as mazda japan recommends due to the fact that the spin-on filter has different flow characteristics and thus different oil pressures results in the engine... using 5W30 will maintain similar pressures

On Mazda 6's with 2.3L engines, with spin on type oil filters, mazda still recomends 5W20 oil.

I'll keep my cartridge filter since it's fun watching the oil jockey have to remove the plastic cover, remove the filter and re-install everything...

Hey Ron you may change your mind when the mindless oil jockey loses one or more of the screw/bolts that hold it on and replaces them (or not) with what ever they can find hanging around.

As a former owner of a '57 Chevy with a 283 (don't get too excited, it was a long time ago. The car is long gone after a fatal wreck) AND the cartridge oil filter, I would be happy to get rid of mine. I had more problems with misaligned gaskets, tightening them too much or not enough and oil leaks with that thing. I finally installed a newer 327 w/spin on and couldn't have been happier. (rei)
