The market for budget-priced, hot hatches in the U.S. has dwindled over the last two decades, with most of the major players either inflating prices or dropping out altogether. However, according to Automotive News, Suzuki execs have confirmed that the next generation Swift will finally make its way to U.S. shores, likely sometime in 2010.

The Swift and its Sport-y sibling are currently sold in Japan and Europe, gaining a significant amount of praise from consumers abroad looking for an entertaining compact that appeals to both cheapskates and enthusiasts alike.

The current Swift Sport, in European guise, comes equipped with a 1.6-liter VVT engine, creating 125 HP and sending power to the front wheels via a close-ratio five-speed transmission. Considering that the current Sport tips the scales at around 1,000 pounds less than a Mini Cooper S, it will provide more bang-for-the-buck than any vehicle available - especially if it comes in under $15-large.

Better late than never like the Mazda2.

Why do you say never? There are rumors all over the web that the 2 will be coming here.

Automobile mag reported that it was confirmed at Geneva that it would not be coming here as a Mazda :(

I love the 2, but the Swift has the awesome proportions that remind me of the first gen new mini cooper.. just with MUCH cleaner styling

looks like a morph between the scion xa and the cooper. insteresting.

whatever floats your boat.lol

1,000 lbs lighter than a cooper s - ~1,600 lbs. i don't buy that, but even if it's ~2200 (i.e., Yaris weight), i have two words:

hoo. frickin'. ray.

i also read the "no US Mazda 2" story. i predict bad things, unless there's a 2300lb Escort GT w/ a 148-hp 2.0L.

I had read that it was coming this year...boo...my vendors make all kinds of stuff for this car. The modded ones in Asia are cool as hell.
I was thinking of getting one myself.

Wow, that is insanely light. lol, does it even pass crash safety tests?

light =/= unsafe, and heavy =/= safe.

that said, if it's that light elsewhere, i'd be surprised if it came in much north of 2000 here. for comparison, i wonder how those dimensions measure up to the Yaris hatch?
