If you're a newb, stay away from ebay...all the auctions look great but unless you know exactly what you're bidding on, you'll most likely get screwed.

People don't post the right power ratings, they don't post the right pictures, they neglect to tell you things about what they're selling.

For example, that isn't a 1000 watt Kenwood amp, its a 460 watt amp with a max power of 1000 watts...(tested at about 545watts). The guy selling it knows it, he'd just rather you believe it was a 1000watt amp because it says 1000watts on the heat sink. A little research would bring you to this site:

If you are looking to save money, stick with your stock system, because as soon as you buy something off ebay, you're going to realize its not what you want, and before you know it your buying more equipment and eventually you become addicted to it.

Pick up a few car audio magazines at your local magazine stand (or Barnes and Nobel) and see what products are reviewed and what equipment the featured cars have. Then go to a stereo shop and see what they recommend (again that can be a biased opinion because they want to sell their products). Listen to what they have and don't buy anything. Go to a few stores and let them know you're shopping around. Finally, ask us about what you're about to buy (I think you've got this part down already).

Different brands are great at different things.

Since you are looking at subs and amps I'll lead you in the right direction as far as what brands to look for. . .

Subwoofers: JL Audio, Eclipse, Infinity, Image Dynamics, Kicker

Amplifiers: Precision Power (PPI), Phoenix Gold, Alpine, JL Audio, MTX

thats coo....guess i will do some research before i buy....i just dont want to spend 300 bucks on an amp...you know....

Well, my suggestion is to lower your power requirements.

I just helped a friend out with his system. We got a pair of JL Audio 10W0 subwoofers, rated 125watts rms, and I sold him an MTX 4channel amp (RMS 25x4 or 100x2 at 12v -- 65x2 or 250x2 at 14.4v) which I got off ebay a few months ago.

His car had upgraded 4x6 speakers already and he had a head unit from a previous install. I used the amp's rear channels to power the subs giving them their recommended power when the car is running and used the front channels to power the front speakers. The amp has a built in crossover and bass boost which helped me tune the system. Anyway, here's the total cost (shipping is calculated in to the prices):

Subwoofers 2 JL Audio 10W0 (8ohms) (ebay) $170
MTX Thunder 204 $125 (ebay)
Wiring kit and speaker wire (sounddomain) $50
Carpet, vinyl, and grill cloth (selectproducts) $50
Installation materials (Lowes) $35
Fiberglassing materials (Walmart) $40

Total: $470.

When looking for amplifiers, I would take a good brand over a higher powered not-so-good brand any day. If the power isn't clean, its not going to sound good.
