STS2 Miata Build Part Deux - 2008

glad to see you back on the boards. the Auto news section was slow w/o you.

I noticed that. Back just in time for Detroit. The baby and family visiting was really dragging my post count down.

Well, more updates: SHE LIVES! Tonight I took Dory for a ride to bed in the brakes and do a quick break in on the clutch. Current impressions... the car feels AWESOME! I've never driven something with this much spring, and it's a whole new sensation. I took an on ramp at what I thought was a decent clip, and there was about no body roll. It was really weird, but totally awesome. The suspension is currently a WAG in terms of ride heights and shock settings, so I'll be waiting on a corner balance, and it REALLY needs an alignment. The steering wheel's a bit crooked and it doesn't exactly track straight. Only a few minor (I hope lol) issues revealed themselves tonight.

1. I was getting a loud squeal from the front right. Pushed the dust shield back at a gas station and the noise went away. For the record: brakes get HOT! I stuck my hand b/w the spokes of the wheel to push it. When it moved, my hand dropped just enough to burn my wrist on the rotor. And bash my hand on the spokes of the wheel as I yanked it out of there LOL. I'm retarded.

2. Old gas sucks. It had a really bad hesitation on throttle tip in. It was pretty much on fumes. I put a half tank in and any hesitation went away. It also felt a lot stronger.

3. This is the only thing that kinda worries me. The shifter feels kind of spongy going in to second, fourth and reverse. I'm going to take that apart tomorrow and have a look. Hopefully my stupid ass got sloppy when I put the shifter in and the bushing's not seated properly or something. I REALLY don't want to pull the transmission again. I mean, it's driveable, you just have to be very conscious of putting a little extra oomph into the 1-2 and 3-4 shifts.

lol brakes get hot...derrr (silly)

I know right? In retrospect I could have used the stock tire tool I had sitting in the trunk, but instead, I was a dumbass. Just goes to show you: I'm not as smart as I look. And I don't look very smart haha

well, took the shifter out and everything looked good physically. I reinstalled it and made sure the busing was in correctly. It was hard to see, but it felt like it went in right. Bolted the dust boots back up and it felt a little better. Still not 100% tho. The 1-2 shift is a lot better, it's the 3-2 heel toe down shift is still a little... blah. It's definitely liveable for now. Kevin made a comment last night that this may be the reason the trans was sold. Definitely a possibility. I don't have enough time before the first 2 events right now to really tear the thing down again. It shouldn't take but a few hours now that I've done it. I just need a full weekend to take care of it. I'm going to take my time, get the parts I need to service the original trans, then the next free weekend I've got the trans will be coming out of the car and the original will be going back in. I just need to replace the front and rear oil seals. I don't have the parts guides in front of me right now, so I'll be ordering them tomorrow morning. No real rush because I'll be in Daytona next weekend. I *may* be able to it the weekend after tho. We'll see.

Wow... that was rambling lol. Stream of consciousness ftl :p

leaking and the shifting was a little sloppy

I fixed the shifter on that one. But yea, to answer Luke's question, it is leaking out of both the front and rear seals. I was intending to re-use that one until I found that it had fluid all over the inside of the bell housing.
