STS Miata - Project: Stronger Faster Lighter

One thing I keep forgetting to ask. Once you get the MS working are you going to be tuning for E85? Can the miata flow enough extra fuel to make it worthwhile?

I'd have to look at the logs again, but at max power, IIRC, there wasn't enough wiggle room to add the extra 25%(?) fuel at the top end. I could be totally wrong though.

I guess I should update this now that we have had a real event (as opposed to a TnT in wet cold weather): The car feels absolutely phenomenal. If you were to do a graph for the car, w/ the x axis being time and the y axis being "awesome", there would be a massive peak on the right side of the graph. The extra power from the rebuilt engine is nice. Combine that with losing 100 lbs from the car over the last few months and she'll get up out of her way. And the changes we've made to the suspension have made the car so much better to drive. I haven't been that happy coming back to grid in a very long time. It's predictable, the front end bite is insanely better than it was last year, we've cured the snap oversteer and the rear end, while it will still dance with you, is very, VERY controllable.

With everything I futzed with over the off season, I was convinced that we were going to show up for the first event with a steaming pile of ass of a car. Instead I now have a car with limits that I was unable to find this weekend. I paxed 12th out of over 150 cars. Not that great until you look at the list of national trophy and championship winners who were in the 11 slots ahead of me. I'm extremely pleased with that performance and can't wait to get the lighter wheels w/ better offset so we can run the 205 RE11s. We're still on old RE-01Rs... most of the ST/S cars ahead of me were on fresh Toyo R1Rs. I also can't wait to see the tire war begin @ the dixie tour this weekend :D

you're getting new wheels? what are you getting?

The 2nd gen of the current wheels. They've got a friendlier offset for wider tires. Still 15x7.5, and only 10.4 lbs according to the website. FWIW, they're known for being a bit conservative on their weights. The current ones were supposed to be 12.5 and ended up being 12 even, so hopefully that same thing holds true w/ the gen 2 wheels. They'll look the same but they're tucked in an extra 6mm IIRC

lol i thought the current wheels were supposed to be the end all miata wheel designed specifically for the car?

and toyo r1r? since when did toyo have a competition tire?

For about a year or so. They're friggin marshmallows. I wouldn't call it the end all wheel, but for the money it was the best you could do a year ago, and given the tire choices last year it was the best wheel. Now he's got a new one that will work better w/ more tires (the newly available wider competitive street tires), and is lighter. I'll likely trade the ones I have for a set of decent 15x7s to use as transport / rain tires once the new wheels come in.

If I were to run anything much wider on these wheels, even rolling the fender in the rear likely wouldn't be enough for the tire we decide to run (either the 225 R1R or the 205 RE11s) later in the year.

haha if you don't mind too much ;). I've got your stickers btw. I've got another set of tires that I'd like to get mounted as a 2nd set for the evo-school coming up next month. We'll likely go through those and the ones you mounted last week at the school. I'll have that box of decals in by then btw ;)

What happened to the Lexus?

Wheel fell off. The story goes that the shop that did his street tires had the lugs on so tight that even w/ one of the nicer / more powerful electric impact guns, they couldn't break them loose the day of the event. Needed a sizeable breaker bar to do it. The twisting that likely put on the studs stressed them enough that on course they broke. Likely just 1 or 2 broke then had a chain reaction... he said he started to feel a vibration and slowed down, then it was just "three wheels on his wagon".

No no no... Three wheels on his sport-cross. Toyota would never admit to making a station wagon, look at the new Camry wag.... I mean Venza! :p

Some video from this weekend:

Forgive my melon getting in the way. It was the 1st event w/ this mount so I wasn't quite sure where to put it. I should have it rectified this weekend, along w/ taking care of some of the vibration hopefully.

Since we are sharing, here is some in-car from a S. FL PCA event earlier this month. There was an error in timing on the first run, so I got a re-run(second run). See everyone in Cecil in a few days!

man, I do not know that I could run that hard that close to concrete curbing. Nicely done. So glas all our lots are very wide open for the most part.

See you @ the Tour :)
