STS Miata - Project: Stronger Faster Lighter

Anyone else concerned that 5-0 may not like that your tag is completely blocked and your brake lights are almost completely blocked by the tire tail?

yeah I thought about that. I may just velcro the tag up in the hard top window

ah, gotcha. Yeah I didn't really take one.

Don't worry. Taylor just wants to have a picture that makes your Miata look like a cock complete with balls.

Rolled fenders, got my shaved RE11s mounted. They're about .8" wider than the 195 RE-01Rs, but for whatever reason (I think due to the tread pattern or lack therof once shaved) they look like steam rollers by comparisson. Fortunately they're only .3" taller.

So, if you were wondering what a buttload of tire looks like on an STS car...

the way the flash hits the tail lights makes it look like you have ricer "euro" altezzas

Comparison: 195/50/15 RE01R on a 7" wheel vs the 205/50/15 RE11 on a 7.5" wheel:

IMG_1619.jpg

FWIW, the RE01Rs sit pretty flush w/ the rim on a 7" wheel, where the 205s are actually a little pinched on a 7.5" wheel, so the difference in height's not in the wheels

And since everyone wanted more pics of the TD wheels and the tire tail (I'm out of town tomorrow so I packed up the car so it'll be cocked locked and ready to rock Sunday morning):

Is the strap on the tire tail going to work like that? Looks like it could easily slip. I know it's there for insurance, but wouldn't it make more sense to have it strapped closer to the wheel/tire than across like you have?

What you can't see is that it actually goes around the bar of the tire tail itself in the middle of the wheels. That'll stop them twisting and keep them together. The tire tail's also got the end plates held in by pins to keep everything secure:

EDIT: I see what you're saying now after looking @ the pics again. I'll probably re-do the strap before I head out sunday morning.

Damn. I thought I might finally get a chance to make a FAIL pic. Spoiled again... ;)

The new 'street' wheels look great on the car. I dunno if it's the lighting or what, but everything, including the red top, look quite good together.

lol I did some very scientific testing (pulling/pushing really hard on the tires lol) and they're not going anywhere. The goal isn't to prevent them spinning (which isn't really a problem), just to keep them together so that if 1 or both of the pins for the end-plates fail, the wheels on either side will keep the opposite ones on the bar.

Good to meet all the Mazda 24/7 peeps. Sorry I wasn't able to hang out, I was working when STS was running. I ended up sneaking out with a 3rd in CSP. Hopefully I'll get the links to the video soon so that I can post them.

Here are the videos for some runs from Cecil. My co-driver is first, then mine second. These are our fastest runs, other than my Sunday run, it would have been the fastest, except I caught a cone. Raw time, it was my fastest and as you can see near the end of the run, the car had an issue, and coasted for a half-second.

I found a seized passenger side rear caliper when I drove the car to work for funzies on Wednesday (there's just something about driving a street legal race car on the street... This black car w/ a red top and silver stickers all over it, looks like it's been through some hell, loud as hell, popping and snorting and crackling... just puts a smile on my face :D)

Anyway, got to work and the passenger side rear outer pad was smoking and the wheel was hot as hell. Fortunately it was only a 15 minute drive... and I could smell it the whole way. So I sourced a used one today and when I went to pull it apart, sure enough that one was seized as well. ****. Oh well.. it's a huge hunk of metal... how do you fix a huge hunk of metal? With a hammer. After a lot of hammering, I was finally able to break the SOB loose. Apparently the PO of that caliper hadn't taken much care of the brakes... they had ZERO grease. The fixed slider pin actually had a little rust build up on it and zero lube.

Anyway, I disassembled the sliding assembly, thoroughly cleaned and greased the slider pins and passageways. Tomorrow the new caliper goes on and likely tomorrow night the brakes get bled. Disaster averted because my car has 4 drivers that have paid cash money for the priviledge... missing an event, while probably forgivable due to unforeseen consequences, isn't acceptable in my eyes. We have 3 events in 2 weeks, so I would have been thoroughly Effed had I not gotten this thing working. Anyway, I'll have it together with enough time to hopefully get a little sleep in before the event on Sat.

Went down to play with the Middle GA SCCA this weekend and took home FTD and top PAX :D. And no, it wasn't a cake walk. I had a few of the Atlanta region regulars and a couple SM cars that kept me pretty honest. Only got it by .055, but on my last run I put together what, for me, was a pretty much perfect run and took home the W. Had a really fun time :D
