Stock Stereo is dying

Hey,

When I put any CD in the stereo it can't find the tracks and just stays at 0:00. Also when I try to switch to FM, I can see the radio finding stations("ST") but there is no sound. The little red light that is "CD in" turns off when you switch to FM even though the cd is still in, so you can't even eject the CD.

The only way to get the radio to work after putting a CD in is to switch off the car. Then, at start up, the CD can be ejected.

This just happened without any warning. And now the above is consistant.

Any idea?

You didn't specify if it's an aftermarket or factory. I seriously doubt that the factory unit die this early.

(the title says "stock")

heh... owned indeed.

I'd try to reset the head unit (unplug the negative battery terminal for a minute)
This is the first time that I've heard the factory unit crapping out.

Yeah I've never heard of this happening before. My advice would be to invest in a nice aftermarket unit. It will not only work and look better, but if you buy a good unit, it will improve the sound quality quite a bit, even on stock speakers.

like the other guys said either check if warranty covers it or buy a good aftermarket unit. its amazing what a good headunit will do to speakers. its a whole other world of listening pleasure.

i agree.. i've got the kenwood 919 (otherwise known at the MSP deck) with the stock speakers and it is an improvement.

He lives in the city (just outside Boston)...and an aftermarket head unit will attract thieves.

However, if you are not covered by the warranty anymore I don't suggest paying the dealer price to replace the stock Protege5 head unit. Either get one from a board member who upgraded or buy an aftermarket unit for half the price of a new stock unit.
