stock air box mods [pondering]

So i got a k&n drop in and am looking at the simota drop in.
after taking the stock box out and looking it over it looks like
theres a huge lost in pressure because of what looks like a
volumetric chamber (usually used to lower pressure) now ive
yet to experiment with this but has anyone closed off that
chamber? it can be removed from the stock box and can be
plugged easily. might be cool to even get some readings off
that section too (ie psi gauge, temp sensor, etc)

as for restriction, the grid in front of the MAF is quite restrictive.
not sure how much but i could do that math and come up with
some figure. only reason i can think of to have that grid there is
to protect it from debris. there is a section to straighten air but
that adds little to no restriction.

im not so sure that the stock box it self is restrictive, but more
of a lost in pressure. considering the volume and how the air is
entering the box (with out the resonator) it looks like all the air
coming in has so much space to expand that the engine is actually
taking in air very freely after the filter.

as for improvements to the current stock box design, the only
things i can see to free up some some HP is to cap off that
volumetric chamber and seal up sections of the box to increase
the pressure coming into the intake.

im thinking about buying another stock air box to mod on. see what
i can come up with.

i know this is a lot of pondering for just the stock box and would
be loads easier to move to a CAI or SRI. but i like to tinker and
modify.

please if you have any comments or suggestions let me know :)

thanks

What you could do is take some duct tape and seal off both ends of that little box and see if running it like that makes any difference. That way, if it doesn't do anything, or it makes the car perform worse, you can just pull it off.

You know I was looking at that today while cleaning my throttle body! Wonder what I could do... but honestly I'm going to replace my intake with a CAI, but have you done the air box cutout mod? LOL! SO ghetto but get a jigsaw and cut a hole underneath the filter area at the front, kinda simulates a Short Ram setup.

I have done a custom CAI on mine. Hiding the mod from my wife HA! I took of all resonators and then got a piece of an old CAI from my MSP and cut it to draw air from the fender well. Looks stock from on top but works really well.

"Blitzd" dude do you have pics? Sounds like a cool and stealth install! Please share!

No I don't have them yet but I am sure I can get some this Friday. Yeah this car is all about being decieving lol.

so i got my K&N drop in, plugged the volumetric chamber.

one thing i can tell is the K&N flows much higher, engine noise
is much more audible, and @ highway speeds it pulls better.
responce however city wise has not changed much, tho the tone
is much better. i did not reset my ECU for the K&N drop in and have
put in over 200 miles on it (daily commute to work is 50). MPG wise
ive noticed no difference, i have changed octanes and did the
advanced timing so that my be a factor on this.

im still looking for another stock intake box to mess with, i have some
plans that i think you guys will be interested in, but first i need another
box.

@racerboy777: honestly cutting the bottom of the box will do little to nothing. the 2.5" opening at the bottom + the volume inside the box is more then enough for the intake to take air in sufficiently. its possible that it has the potential of taking in cooler air as it is no longer restricted to taking air from one central area but the benefits of removing the bottom of the box is questionable

@Blitzd: nice, too bad my fenders dont have vents.

I took the resenator off my car like some of you have. I haven't added anything to the box just left the hole open. I did notice how close to the raidiator it sits. I assume that is just pulling in nothing but hot air correct?

And if thats the case I am doing more harm then good eh?
