So i got a k&n drop in and am looking at the simota drop in.
after taking the stock box out and looking it over it looks like
theres a huge lost in pressure because of what looks like a
volumetric chamber (usually used to lower pressure) now ive
yet to experiment with this but has anyone closed off that
chamber? it can be removed from the stock box and can be
plugged easily. might be cool to even get some readings off
that section too (ie psi gauge, temp sensor, etc)
as for restriction, the grid in front of the MAF is quite restrictive.
not sure how much but i could do that math and come up with
some figure. only reason i can think of to have that grid there is
to protect it from debris. there is a section to straighten air but
that adds little to no restriction.
im not so sure that the stock box it self is restrictive, but more
of a lost in pressure. considering the volume and how the air is
entering the box (with out the resonator) it looks like all the air
coming in has so much space to expand that the engine is actually
taking in air very freely after the filter.
as for improvements to the current stock box design, the only
things i can see to free up some some HP is to cap off that
volumetric chamber and seal up sections of the box to increase
the pressure coming into the intake.
im thinking about buying another stock air box to mod on. see what
i can come up with.
i know this is a lot of pondering for just the stock box and would
be loads easier to move to a CAI or SRI. but i like to tinker and
modify.
please if you have any comments or suggestions let me know
thanks
