has anyone heard whether or not this is a good idea or a bad idea? I really need to clean my carpets to get some of the salt stains off of them (stupid Toronto). Would it be safe to use on the upholstery as well?

good question. i also have some nasty salt stains on my carpet.
anyone?

I used to detail cars (thinking about going back to it), I used to shampoo (steam clean) carpets/upholstery daily. I would definately say it is safe on the carpet and I recommend getting it done. When done by someone who has any idea what they are doing, it makes it look good. I dont know about doing it on our seats though, i wouldnt dare

Get a shop vack and a hose with warm water. As you hose, Vac then let it dry over a day with the windows open... Be careful not to flood the floor as the ECU is on the passengers side under their feet...

why would you avoid the seats?
Simply because the method we used where I worked was:
lay down the chemicals, water, scrub like hell with a STIFF brush, then extract it.....With the way our seats are, I would be afraid of them being damaged/starting to fray.... if you are careful you will be ok

we didn't get those north of the border so I don't have to worry about 'em Snake.

TPHSKAB: if I just used the steam-cleaner that you could use on your household carpets and such, and used a mild amount of detergent, that'd probably be ok?

That should be ok. If it is able to fit....I always thought household ones were bigger, but if it fits, you should be fine

I think you can get smaller hand-held attachments for them for just this purpose, maybe I'll do some before and after pics when I try it :p

definately do it! and make sure you get all the soap/detergent/chemical out when you do it.....take your time. It is so worth it. I have seen so many crappy jobs where the carpet dries and is SO stiff cuz there is still soap in there
