Sneak Peek @ Grand Am Cup Protege Race Car

Hey Guys,

We have been working like crazy to try to get this car done for this year but didn't quite make it..... We were able to get some early testing done at the Glen last week and thought you might be interested.
The guys at Kartboy have been tremendous and have helped in numerous ways. The shifter is one of the best and most positive shifting we have encountered in numerous race cars!
We are currently working with Mazdaspeed to convert it to a MSP for next season. The NA motor isn't half bad since we were able to "spank" a 944 and embarass a Porsche GT2 that were at the Glen for an open track day! With the turbo is should be quite a kick in the pants!

BTW, we are always looking of crew members.....we are in WNY....if interested e-mail.

Thanks,
Tom Bork

I can keep up with a 944 non turbo in with just 4lbs in my pr5 (i'm not a great driver, yet, but am pretty consistent)...a porsche gt2 I cannot belive a n/a powered mp3 can keep up with as i often go against 911s and they eat me up on anything that resembles a straight...i can only thing that the gt2 had a amateur behind the wheel...don'b mean to rain on your parade and am looking forward to seeing some good racing

ps...i'm in northern va and have pit crewed for several honda challenge guys but also ali arsham's (he is the co-founder of NASA) gogogear racing team in the USTCC. i also am in the process of getting my own competition license as i plan to do some amatuer racing in the future.

shoot me an email if you are down my way (northern va) like at summit or VIR. I might make a trip to beaver run as its not too far from me either (have to family to work around).

good luck

jaje

Guys,
Sorry it took so long to reply....has been crazy here.....

Anyway, as far as the note regarding the GT2 Porsche, in no way did I mean that we were able to outrace him down the straights as the HP from a GT2 is somewhere in the neighborhood of 400, however once we got to the twisties I caught right back up and was able to run with him consistantly. Yes, he was not a Pro driver but I suprised him at the cornering speeds we were able to develop in the Protege (of course with a non-stock suspension).

As for the 15" Rota Slipstreams.....Yes they are available. However, a modification is necessary in the rear. PM or e-mail me for more info. Otherwise the Slipstreams are a great lightweight wheel for very little $!!!!

Dang...tis a shame you aren't closer. I'd volunteer to crew for you. Been doing it for a friend for quite some time. In fact, this guy drove Ed Magner's Cavalier once this year and has been, repeatedly, asked to drive again.

I gotta friend that's gone to Glen a few times with his red 87 944. His name is Tim. Any chance its guy you raced with?

You might see a red Protege5 with Motul graphics at some of those Grand Am events. It's campaigned by a Mazda dealership race team from near Toronto.

So, what are you going to do with the car next year?

I mean, I heard that GrandAm Cup is consolidating/eliminating classes. Will the car be competitive in next year's class?

Sweet, another Protege race car...

But um, that paint job is seriously ugly...Just MHO.

Nice job though!

KCBHIW.....too bad your not closer....we'd love to have the help!

Chuyler1 ....I don't think it was your friend Tim's 944, the one at WGI was white

Rowan....Yes, we saw the car at Mosport. Any idea what they are doing with the car currently and for next season?

Cortez.....Yes GAC is combining classes. We plan on converting the car to the Mazdaspeed Protege specs by turbocharging it, have submitted to GAC for approval....waiting to see .......

StuttersC.....You are definitely entitled to your opinion....However, the paint was by our sponsor PPG and draws quite a bit of attention at the track. I too was unsure of the scheme at first but it grew on me and it gets us noticed which is good for all the sponsors. I like the car better with Silver wheels vs. the gunmetal that were on in the test day shots.....JustMHO

Cool.

I saw that they published their rules for 2004 and the only Mazda listed on ST is the Mazda 6. I hope they approve your Mazdaspeed Protege and that you guys do great!

MP3racer: As far as that Motul P5 goes, I think they were going to be bringing it down to the US for a couple of events. (Skipping Quebec and going straight to the US events to get more exposure and a better chance to talk to some of the guys running Proteges in World Challenge)

Kevin from DaveWood mentioned they might be selling their red Protege5 racer next year because of the new rules. He also said it is kind of leaning in the direction of the Mazda6 becoming the car that will be the one they'll have to use next year ( as the Speed World Challenge guys are doing? ) .. I guess Mazda really wants to push the 6.

Although ... They just posted an entire Mazdaspeed Protege suspension in our club's "For Sale" section today so perhaps they are already building one of those for next season !

Yeah, I would figure the color scheme would get noticed. It is very shiny.

Like I say, it's really cool to see another Protege racer out there. :)

Mr. Tom Bork, What kind of Koni's are on there? You need some 2817's if you don't have any! Thanks.

Jeff,

That is exactly what we have on the car. They are GREAT!
Are you affiliated with Tripoint?
Thanks,
Tom
