Hmm...

it's part of the fight or flight reflex, it's common for them to regurgitate their recent meal if they are being "attacked", after taking in a meal that is often larger around then them they can't escape as quickly as they could without the meal on board so they throw it up to help escape, and in this case I am sure it would be hard to get away carrying a hippo in your belly, and aslo after seeing it throw up a hippo, the attacker probably wouldn't want to mess with that bad ass any longer.
