Smart city brake support

Does the 6 have this? If not, when is it getting it? It says late availability in the brochure.

Pretty sure my 6 does but I've never seen it work so I've forgotten all about that feature. I did see a Red Warning sign on my dash when a car cut me off on the freeway. He never got close enough that I thought we would collide but the red warning lit up for just a second and he took off anyway so I never had to hit the brake. To be fair, that was the forward obstruction warning, not the smart city brake... I was going over 70mph so the car would never have braked... although with the MRCC (adaptive cruise control) the car will either apply the brakes or engine brake when a slower car gets in front of me.

It definitely does! Pulled into my parking garage yesterday, as I pulled up to the gate I usually roll up pretty far (the arm is high enough that it goes over my hood, so I roll under it... or used to) and as I was just about to roll under the arm (waiting for it to open, it's slow), the car slams on the brakes and the dash turns red with "SCBS Activated" on the screen. Guess I'll wait patiently for it to open next time...

My understanding, even after watching the video above, is that the cruise control MUST be set for this feature to work. So, I'm not sure why it's called Smart "City" Brake Support. It really wouldn't work in the the City, would it? Perhaps I misunderstand, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

He only used cruise control to show that his feet did not apply the brakes.

This is actually a confusing video. I know my May, 2013 build US version Grand Touring has SCBS because the car has the option of enabling or disabling the feature. I have the feature enabled, but have not come across the circumstances which wiould induce the system. One thing i remember reading in the owner's manual (or some other official piece of Mazda literature) is that the system operates between 1-19 mph, hence the "city" nomenclature. I do not know if it would work with cruise control on, or if cruise can even be set at 19 mph. Mine is not MRCC, but I doubt that either version (conventional cruise or MRCC) can be set to operate at speeds below 20mph, and I have no idea if MRCC can bring the vehicle to a complete stop even if set at 30mph and the vehicle in front comes to a complete and controlled non-emergency stop. MRCC owners would be better equipped to answer this question than I would be.

What is confusing about the video is the operator never stated the speed at which the vehicle was traveling at to trigger SCBS, just that he had cruise control enabled. I do stand behind the fact that SCBC operates only at speeds under 20 mph, and it does not guarantee a complete stop, only that it will mitigate the severity of an accident (and possibly avoid the accident entirely) only under certain conditions at speed under 20 mph if the driver fails to use the brake pedal of his/her own accord in the presence of a forward obstruction.

At any rate, SCBS is an impressive safety feature, and probably involves more complex technology that either LDWS or FOW which also involve radar to induce auditory and/or visual warnings, but no braking application under any circumstances.

There is nothing confusing about this stuff, and plenty of info is available on the net. The video is wrong, Smart City Brake Support does not use a radar, instead it uses laser in the upper part of windshield (where rain and light sensors are). It will work up to 19mph. If it senses impact it will prime the brakes first, and then if the driver hasn't applied them, it will apply them itself. That's all. Laser that measures distance, some sort of logarithm and calculations on car's part, [if]imminent impact, [then]apply brakes

FROM MAZDA'S WEBSITE:

"The SCBS system uses a laser sensor to detect a vehicle or obstacle in front and automatically reduces the extent of the brake rotor travel to quicken braking operation. If the driver fails to perform any operation to avoid a collision, such as applying the brake, SCBC automatically activates the brakes and reduces the engine output at the same time. In this way, SCBC helps to avoid collisions or mitigate the damage from rear-end collisions at low speeds, which are the most common accidents with other vehicles. The SCBS system also includes Acceleration Control for Automatic Transmission(2), which helps avoid unintentional acceleration that could be caused by depressing the accelerator instead of the brake pedal.

Details of functionality
•Smart City Brake Support (SCBS)
When driving from approximately 4 - 30km/h, a laser sensor mounted at the top of the front windshield glass detects a vehicle or obstacle in front of the car and reduces brake rotor travel to quicken braking when the system calculates that there is a risk of a collision occurring. Next, if the driver fails to perform any avoidance maneuver such as applying the brake, an automatic braking operation is activated. When the speed difference between the driver's car and the vehicle in front is less than 30km/h, the system is designed to avoid, or mitigate the damage from a collision.
•Acceleration Control for Automatic Transmission
If a driver accelerates when an obstacle in front has been detected by the SCBS' laser sensor, the system alerts the driver with an alarm sound and an indicator. At the same time, engine output is curbed to stop unintended acceleration"

yes..mine actually kicked in today when i went to park up near a fence in my driveway..guess I came in a little too quick

(i have a touring w/ tech package)

hi guys, I have a touring with tech package but I don't see a button or setting to enable/disable this feature. Can someone guide me to it please? I never even saw the SCBS warning on my dash. Am I missing something?
