Slow Air Conditioner?

:
2002 Protege5
I picked up my car in February so the last few days has been the first time i've used the A/C. Thing is that it seems to take a very long time for the A/C to warm up ( err, ah, cool down), especially compared to the Sebring I drive occasionaly.

Has anyone else noticed that the P5 A/C takes longer than average to get going?

Well, my last car was an '87 Olds Cutlass Cierra S, and it's air conditioning was long since shot, soooo this is much better. But in answer to your question, compared to other (normal) vehicles, the air seems average to me...

Not bad for me, also remember it is having to cool a larger interior volume.
Like the AC on my parents Ford truck doesn't blow as cool but sure cools the thing off quickly.
My Saturn was the worst that dang thing was a freakin green house.

I live in one of the hottest parts of the states and I can say that the AC work great! No compliants...

When it's humid out I can see how that would effect it...

Do you allow the vehicle ample time to warm up? I've found if you put the A/C on high with all the windows down for a few minutes it greatly increases the effectiveness.

my last car was a 91 Plymouth Sundance that didn't have working A/C so this is VERY nice for me.. :D

Are you using the "outside air" or the "recirculating air" switch? Recirc cools a lot more efficiently.

Fastest way to cool the car is to open the rear windows and tilt the moonroof to blow all the hot air out for about a few minutes, then close the windows while the ac being on recirculating. After a while , switch back to the other mode.

But the a/c is a little slow in this car. I guess it takes getting used to.

maybe ppl are expecting too much from our cars? he he
mine takes about 10 secs actually get cool airs... I don't mind it anyway ;)

and not only do I and TexP5 live in an equally hot place...its ALWAYS humid as well....usually the humidity level matches the temp or very close...

there is nothing like it being between 95 and 100 deg.F outside and have the humidity being at 90-95%!!

our heat index has been well over 100 for the last week....sometimes as high as 110-115....and MY A/C works like a champ!

as TexP5 mentioned....turn on your A/C in RECIRC mode first...once the car cools off, which it will do quicker in this mode, then turn it on to outside air.

I've also found the center console vents (directly above the radio) blow the coldest air and the side vents are more to assist in circulation.

In addition to switch to outside air after the desired temperature is reached, I'd also recommend switching to top/bottom vents versus just the tops.

mine cools off fine, but doesnt seem to get really cold...maybe i need some more coolant.

My A/C works great! And I'd say I have the toughest car to cool off, being black on the interior AND exterior. It's true that the RECIRC setting works best for initially cooling off the car. It's interesting how many people don't even know what those two settings mean and when to use which one. Oh well... stay cool!

Have the dealer check ur freon levels and use the settings these people suggested. Mine works pretty well but the first minute is pretty crappy.

I live in Raleigh, NC; and we just got passed 90 deg. for the first time yesterday (92f). My a/c takes too long to cool, even with the windows down at first...

Must be a P5 thing I guess.... Oh well.
