Short ram help

Hey guys. I'm new here but I've been lurking in the shadows reading various sections of this site or a while so I thought I'd finally register lol.

I'm considering throwing out the closed air box intake. And swapping it out for a short ram, perhaps ?
Id really prefer a cold air intake but the car tends to run hot a lot, so putting it anywhere near the radiator would seem bad from what I know so far.

Now my question is this. If I run with a short ram, will I be required to fit a mass airflow sensor inside it?

I'm fairly new to cars and all so I figured it would be best to ask before actually damaging components lol.

Now to keep in mind, I'm not trying to convert the car into a racing machine, I just feel a loss of power at times when accelerating. And I've been told this could make a small difference. As well as to mpg. I really don't care how its going to sound.. Any help is appreciated :)

Hi, welcome!

The CAI is not located year the radiator. For the MSP longer pipe that runs from your left wheel well into the intake of the turbo. This ensures that air that's coming in is not from the engine bay. An SRI stays in the engine bay and you will definitely have higher temperatures there unless you make yourself a good heat shield.

It's important that you're careful with the CAI as there is a chance of hydro-locking if there is heavy precipitation or if you're going through big puddles. Many like to run a CAI in the summer and SRI in the winter. (Up in Canada where I'm from)

From what I know you should have your MAF between your filter and your turbo along with your air temp sensor somewhere close to that. I've heard of people putting it in other places but I don't know enough to give you any more detail. Hope this helps and welcome to the club.

What can I use for a heat shield? Or is this something I can perhaps buy pre-made already? I did some research on MAF and I believe I should be able to use the old one with the SRI when that part comes in.
Understandable with hydro locking. And I am definitely not even going with the option that could incur that sad event. Thanks for the reply!

Oh and by the way, there is no turbo hehe. It's a mostly stock vehicle. I am only looking to swap out a damaged closed-air box hose. And if I was already doing that I figured might as well get better mpg etc.. (cabpatch)

Just use the SRI. Less trouble. Get an AEM dryflow filter that fits and you are done. MAF will be no problem as long as it is somewhere before the throttle body.
