Service Department Troubles!

I'm new to the Mazda family and all. I have owned Nissan's for a long time, probably because I worked there. Anyways, never had service issues like this.

I took my 02 Pro 5 in last week because I noticed a vibration in the steering wheel when I braked. I thought no big deal, only has 12,000 miles on it. I called the dealer first to make sure they'd take care of it if the rotors were warped and he said yes up unti 24,000 miles. I said cool, I'll bring it up there, this dealer is like 45 minutes from my house---out of the way, but I figured I got a hell of a deal on the car when I bought it I'll go back for service.

I dropped it off in the morning as soon as they opened and left it there, my mistake, guess I should have had one of their mechanics ride with me to show them the problem. Anyways, I get a call back from them at about 2:30 pm that day saying there was nothing wrong with my car, he had 2 service advisors drive it and they couldn't feel anything. I thought you are kidding me right? My wife could feel the vibration and she doesn't even know how to check the oil in her car! Anyways, I argued a bit and he said if I could make it back up there before they closed I could ride with someone and see then. Well I did and the guy still didn't feel any vibration even though I look over and see the wheel shaking myself. They talked me down a bit, because I was pretty pissed in a subtle way. I was not irate. I said ok, I'll keep driving it, if it gets worse, I'll bring it back. Well, 2-3 days later I hear a rubbing sound, like the pad is rubbing against the rotor and it goes away when braking. My wife noticed this sound too, as she drove the car Saturday. So I called the same dealership again and explained the problem, no big deal, bring it up and we'll look at it he said. I get there and wanted someone to ride with me, had to wait 20 minutes. The guy didn't feel anything or hear anything, when I could clearly hear the brakes rubbing or dragging. He told me I would have to pay for a brake inspection if I wanted them to do any further checking on it. I said that does not seem fair. He gets the service manager involved and rides with me, the manager declines to hear anything once again, but he says pull it in the service drive and I personally will make sure they check your brakes out at no charge. I did just that and when I pulled in the service drive the advisor asked me if I was going to pay for that and I said no, the manager said he was going to take care of that. Well , the manager was right there as well and he did not say a word or back me up, so I said ok, I'll take it elsewhere, which I don't want to do and I will call the BBB which I alread did.

Am I outta line here? I mean it's just brakes, but what's the big deal. I know my car because I drive it everyday, the damn steering wheel shakes when braking and now I have an annoying brake noise! What would you do?

I would call MAzda NA 1-800-222-5500. that is bulls***. Granted, Brakes are not covered under warranty, but if your wheel is vibrating, they need to find the issue with that, regardless if its the brakes or not.

Good luck bro.

I'm curious... does this vibration only occur when you brake the vehicle hard? I've noticed that when I go to stop the vehicle abruptly it almost feels like the steering wheel pulls to the side.

The vibration occurs whether I brake hard or not. I know it's a warped rotor, but they won't admit it I guess.

GlhBoy....you were NOT out of line....I am somewhat in the same boat you are.....the fact that the dealer where I got our P5's is about an hour drive from my home....its the closest one BTW....my service department has been cool so far though.

I would have done ONE MORE thing while I was at the dealer if I were you....I would make an appointment to see/talk to the owner, or President, or whatever the HMFIC calls himself at that dealer....i would make it known to him that YOU went well out of your way to do business with HIS dealership...and that you NOW have a problem with your car....a problem that even your wife, a KNOWN NON-CAR PERSON can hear and identify....and HIS service dpeartment can't. even though you have pointed out the shaking steering wheel to them while they were in the car.....MAKE SURE he knows that you are not only taking your business elseware now....but in the future as well....and that you intend to ensure that you tell everyone you know that the service at HIS dealership is SERIOUSLY LACKING....and to steer clear of the dealership as a whole.

Then....I would also do as Boost suggested and call Mazda USA and complain.....

Then....take your car to the nearest Mazda dealer and do business with them.

oh yeah....did the dealer that is giving you trouble give you a "customer satisfaction questionair" ??? I BET NOT. if your even in their neighborhood.....drop by and get one...and let them know how you feel....those things go to their coorperate headquarters first.....I personally would give them as much grief as I could.

Youre not out of line at all. Sometimes the service department can be real a**holes. Like Nuke said get a questionnaire, and give them as bad of ratings you can give. One of customer service people told me that the corporate people really look at that.

Yeah, they seem to really pay attention to the questionnare. The guy that I bought my car from asked me to put all 10's on the one I'm getting in the mail and that he'd take care of me. So I haven't gotten the questionnare yet and I'm having problems with the dealer installed "environmental plus" crap that the sell. They didn't do half the stuff-and what the did was crappy. I gotta go call them....

Anyway, get a copy of that TSB and go back. Then demand even more compensation for the previous trips you made up there that they denied the problem.
