SCCA Auto-X Rules: Read This First, Then Ask Questions

You forgot to ask what header and CAI. Most protege headers remove the first cat so are not STS legal. Also some CAI's move the washer bottle so are not ST legal. Also those rumblings seem to want to keep off the shelf drilled/slotted rotors only getting rid of the custom drilled a whole lot rotors.

I don't see how you can stop one without the other. But you're right, I missed the header part. Anything other than the Wagner would mean STX or FSP.

I have an OBX header that removes the first cat. Why do you say STX or FSP, what would decide between the two? I think I will just have to register as unknown and find out during the event day.

In your case, you could run as-is in either class, but FSP would allow R-compound tires, STX would require street tires. FSP allows more modifications, though.

If you're not looking to spend a bunch of money, I'd either swap headers and go STS or stay as is and run STX. STX allows an LSD though, so you'd need one to be anything resembling competitive.

Thanks for the responses.

I don't plan on being competative (but you never know?) this year as it will be my first year trying it out. The main reason is I want to see the limits of my car and my driving, and driving on the street just doesn't allow for that. I will keep my header on, since I will keep on adding parts do the car, so there is no point in going backwards. And since I will use street tires I guess it's STX for me.

What are the rules with chasis braces, such as the ones sold by GTspec? From the first post it makes it sound like they are not allow execpt in the pro class. And what about A/F controllers, and other pigyback systems?

Drive your car like it is this year. Next year figure out if you want to keep driving it and what class or switch to something new. No sense in putting lots of parts onto a car that you are just starting with.

After a year you will most likely know if you want to build your car (or a different car) for a class or if you just want to toss parts on and run in whatever you end up in.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's pretty much what I did. Have some fun and take some time to figure out how involved / competitive you want to be, and what you like to drive.

So Mazda has stopped producing the MSP stock strut replacements. It's a possibility I won't be able to purchase them when it comes time for me to replace the struts in the next year or two and I don't want to fork out thousands for the Tri-Point Koni insert build. What are my options for stock class?

you were/are running the stock Tokigos? Why not switch to the the Blues or Illuminas?

First: Where is the news coming from the mazda is not making the replacements anymore? Also do you have the PN

Fronts are same perch height as the other proteges so you could get something like the tokico illumina and be legal (double check before installing but I think they are the same)

The rears are a real problem. I do not know any other standard shocks that match the perch height correctly. See this post for height differences.
http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showpost.php?p=2129357&postcount=33
Assuming it meets all other stock requirements you could shim up the spring mounting surface to the correct height or cut off the perch and maybe reweld? in the correct location (not sure I would want to weld a shock like that.

help with class

Hey guys, i've been reading alot lately and have decided to auto x for the first time in a couple weeks with my friend from work. But both of us are a little confused on the whole class thing. If anyone could help me out telling me what class my car is in that would be great. It seems like i have mods that they don't list and i don't know how to figure it out. Here's what i have:

03 Mazdaspeed Protege
CAI, FMIC, Hardpipes, BOV, Catless Downpipe, Boost Controller, PiggyBack a/f Controller, Turbo timer, boost gauge, Lowering springs, stock struts, stock sways, stock fstb, short shifter, shifter bushings, Stock size tires, stock rotors, axis pads.

pretty sure that's it.

Thanks in advanced.

FMIC could be DSP legal (15.10.C.3) depending on if you had to cut anything to install it but the BOV is not DSP legal so you would be in Street Modified anyway assuming you did not cut that much to install the FMIC.

is the wing functional? :p

Maybe--maybe not...but it's lighter than the OE "skateboard" and the class rules say that I must run 'a wing'. The one in the photo was an ebay special for $40/shipped.

Fast and Furious FTW!!!

You could probably get something like this to work, and even cheaper:

Not legal (in my case).

The ST* rules say if a car comes OE with a spoiler, than it must use a spoiler. If it comes OE with a wing, it must use a wing. If it comes without, than either or neither is OK.

The ZX2 S/R comes with 'wing' by definition...so this was the lightest wing at a reasonable price that I could find...6+ pounds and $40.

I won't bother to read the rules right now, but IIRC, if it was an option that you could delete, even on the S/R you can remove it, you will of course have to change the decklid to be legal, as I'm sure some persnickity people would say, well you have holes in the trunk, that's not factory. ;)

I am *pretty sure* that a 'wingless' 2000 S/R could not be had--same with foglamps FWIW. By SCCA definition the wing and the fogs are 'standard parts'. Otherwise you'd be correct...
