SCCA Auto-X Rules: Read This First, Then Ask Questions

And a SWORD!

That made no sense. But seriously, you have one shift to make on the entire course...and it's not really super imperative you nail it right on the money, just get the thing into 2nd!

...but other than that, I'd lean towards no, but nobody's likely to care.

I'm going to guess that, unless you start stomping the STi's, you could run on R-comps at 30psi and nobody's really going to care.

Why do you need a shift light? You've got a tach...and ears.

Throttle plate closes well before hitting the rev limiter. Power drops off pretty sharp between 5500 and 6500. My ears aren't that well tuned and I can't take my eyes off the cones yet to check when I hit the right rpm.

I am pretty sure I could get into third gear for parts of the course.

Plus third gear is another 5psi boost.

You're never going to want to be looking at the tach on course. You'll lose more time shifting than you would by being out of the meat of your powerband. I wouldn't sweat it.

X2 on what Todd says.

Just learn to drive the thing, that's what I'm doing. I should have saved my money on parts, because the skill I would learn from driving an inferior setup would have been more valuable than the advantage gained from parts.

There are still different schools of thought on this. There's a thread on SoloAtlanta that went through it quite a bit that I'm too lazy to link to right now, but an opposing opinion is that you should have a well-prepped car so that there's no debate as to whether the gap between you and the front of the pack is the car, or your driving. If the car's good to go, then you know what the problem is, and precisely how slow you are driving it. I tend to subscribe to this school of thought, but I'm no expert.

Oh, the gap between me and the front of the pack is all me. Once it's tuned right, expect Barry to podium.

Tuning would imply that there's more holding the car back than just you.

Also, if you want to know how much gap there is between your car and what an STS car can do, please see the STS Civics in Pro class. Barry's a very good driver, but he's not getting your car anywhere near that.

The way I see it is one less thing to think about. Most of my attention is going to not DNF'ing :)

Oh I know it isn't touching the Pro Civics, but I would like to see it podium.

The car is prolly 20% tuning 80% me

Don't think about it. Like at points 1, there was the tight left right after the start. I figured there's no reason for me to be pegging out first and sliding the back around that cone, so I just used that spot as a shift point. Since I was going to be mostly off throttle anyway, it was a logical point.

Also, 3rd gear might give you more boost, but if you're short shifting 2nd to get into 3rd, will it necessarily help you? You'd be even lower in the rev range that way, and probably making more power in 2nd anyway.

Yeah, granted, I was getting to know the car at the same time, but one time I decided to try to hang on to 1st through all of that, and ended up being all over the rev limiter for a little while before another good shift point came up. FTR, you run out of 1st gear *fast* in a 6-speed NC.

I believe that the software limiting torque in 1/2 is related to steering angle, not just a blanket boost limitation.

i have a babysitter ecu. ~10psi in first and second plus boost limit based on wheel angle plus throttle plate control 1000 rpm before the rev limiter. What I need is engine management :( It's like Mazda doesn't want you autocrossing this car at all.

Well, in STU, you can do engine management. Problem solved. :p

Are you kidding? They still haven't brought that crap out?!?!?

Credit cards. :D

Tires will be going on credit card. Will see how long that takes to pay off. I need a better paying job so I can buy more toys.

After reading through the first post I am still kind of confused which class my car should be in. I am starting auto-x for the first time this year and am about to register, but I am uncertain about the class. Can any of you seasoned drivers help me out?

car:
2001 Mazda MP3
mods:
CAI, header, slotted front rotors with hawk hps pads all around, illumina struts with espelir springs, f/b AWR motor mounts and side inserts, front AWR endlinks, 3 gauges inside, TWM short shifter, toyo proxes 4 tires.

The thing that makes me uncertain are the items that came stock on the car, such as axelback and strut tower.

I am just starting out, and the first event is supposed to be for noobs (ie 2 day "learning curve" class). Hopefully I can learn more about it after I try it out a few times.

For now it sounds like you're in STS. There's rumblings about getting rid of the drilled / slotted rotor allowance, but for now it don't matter ;)
