Safely waxing/polishing a Vivid Yellow Protege5

I am getting ready to do Meguiars 3-Step system again. I emailed Mazda USA last year to verify the Vivid Yellow Protege5 has a clearcoat. They assured me that it does indeed have a clearcoat, but didnt tell me how the clearcoat is applied. I emailed Meguiar's about my experience with doing the 3-Step system last year. After doing step 1, I noticed some yellow paint on my applicator. I also noticed some yellow paint on my applicator when I did step 3. The paint only came off on various spots on the car. Below is the response I recieved from Meguiar's.

The yellow that your are seeing is normal. This is usually an indication that your car was not clear coated or your clear coat is a tinted clear coat. Being that it was only noticed in some spots as well as just a little bit it sounds as though you may have a tinted clear coat. Seeing the pigment of your car on you applicator tells you that the products are working. You need not fear harming your paint and or clear coat.

If this is indeed normal, what is the best way to prevent this from happening to much and damaging the paint job? Anyone else have this problem with their Vivid Yellow or any other color Protege? Any comments/suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks :D

Just did the 3-step on my red yesterday, no color coming off... I'd tend to go with what the meguiars' guy said. I'm sure he knows more about it than 98% of us here

The tinted clearcoat sounds right. I used to work at body shop and often the for a little extra shine the clear coat would be tinted with corrosponding color pearl to make the basecoat "pop" a little more. So more than likely you have a yellow pearl tint in you clearcoat.

The best way to prevent that from happening is not to use too much pressure when you polish. It might be a good idea to only do the 3 step system 2 or 3 times a year, as long as you wax regularly. No need to polish your car once a month! :)

O yea .. if you would like me to give a KICK ASS detailing guide from start to finish with a full product list lemme know.

I use a 4 step I created myself After trying just about every store bought product know to man. It goes.

1. Meguiars Clear coat scrub, which is just about the same as paint cleaner. Except it has less "cut" so it only removes impurites in the clearcoat and not as much actual clearcoat.

2. Mothers Sealer Glaze, this seals the paint and fillsin hides any small scrathes and swirls craeted by previous waxings. By sealing the paint you'll find your wax and polish are easier to maintain and last longer by creating a more uniform surface for which the wax can bond to.

3. Eagle one Polish and Wax in one. I use this more for the polish than the wax. This product is very easy to use and leaves little or no residue when applied in 2 to 3 thin coats. It is however very dusty. But is does leave a very deep rich color with no swirls.

4. Meguiars Gold Class Liquid Wax. 3 coats should do it.

Thats what I do about 3 times a year.

I was told that the color coming of was oxidization. It made sense to me that it could be too. I get the same yellow stuff on my rag when I take off the cleaner. I notice it when I remove the cleaner from my MP3's spoiler, some of the trunk lid and rear bumper just below the license plate. My car is not garaged so I wash it every week and wax it quite often. My car still has that gleam from the first day I bought it. Check out my paint.....still clean

THIS is clean paint ;)

yup me too and just as a question Protege5Gurly
do those wheels scrub, because i know your car is lowered a bit. I took a few pics of it while you were down here for nopi, and I never made it back to ask if you had any problems with rubbing/scrubbing with a few folks in the back or while cornering?
Thanks,
Mike

If you are all goin to Nopi again this year, Ill cya there... and if you catch me by my car ill show ya my wheel wells.

The 2 rear lips where rolled back. Before that was done, with a person in the back and hitting a dip in the road I would rub just a slight ammt.

With the lip now rolled, its doing great.

Can anyone answer this question. What is the difference between the pigment of the paint on my car, and the paint itself? The reason I ask this question is from the response I recieved from Meguiars below.

The color you will see on your applicator is only the pigment of your paint and not the paint it self. Because you are applying these product by hand you will not be able to create a high enough speed or heat to cause any harm to your finish. So no need to worry, go ahead and wax away!!

Dunno, I would guess the pigment is what actually makes it that certain color.??
Here are some pics of my baby, she has a little over 18K miles on her 1 year old life, LOL! She hasnt been waxed yet, but this weekend. Here are a few of her before the good wax job and the last pic is of the stuff im gonna use (not sure which yet) What do you guys think?

Liquid Glass is acually the name of the manufacturer. The suff is truly amazing, it will bring a shine to your car like nothing else. The more you use it, the more the car will shine. It created a protective barrier, kinda like another clear coat. After a couple uses, you just have to wash your car and the shine and lustre is remarkable.

A guy I know bought a 1976 Corvette, he applied liquid glass about once a week for that summer. The previous owner saw the Vette after about 5-6 applications and said that he had NEVER seen the car shine that much.

Check it out @ http://www.liquidglass.com/

Cheers
