s**** Brakes

Okay, I've got 10k miles on my P5 and the brakes sound like their are are down to metal already, but I'm a bit skeptical because I use the engine braking a lot, and AT LEAST 5k of those miles are highway. They sound like they scrape, but I live in Colorado where it is cold as hell and they sound a little better once they warm up. Does anyone have the average for brake wear on a stock P5?? This would help me out a lot.

Thanks

You can bend over and look to see how much pad you have left. That would be the easy way of finding out how much is left.

But, the concensus on this board is that the stock pads will last anywhere from about 25k-40k miles.

Hi man.

I live in socal, and got kind of the same issue, got a 03.5 P5 and every morning (if it is kind of cold) the first time I brake I'll hear this squeaking and kind of grinding noise, then as the breaks heat up there is no more noise.

Took the car for oil change to the dealership and told them about the breaks, they "inspected them" and told me I got more than 95 % on the pads, so they clean them up for dust build up, the sound disappear for about a month or so, now is back again .....

Not sure what to think, but if it keeps this way I'll take it back to them and request a better explanation, seems like the pads are not properly "bedded" or something ....

Chances are you have a little moisture built up on the rotor after sitting overnight. A few stops and it will rub off the build up on them. nothing to worry about....

Come on High School Graduates! It is 'Brakes' (not 'breaks'!!)...

(argh)

AAh, Prozac[tm] kicks in!

I just passed the one year mark with my protege (dec 18th) and my brakes have been squeaking and squeelin like a pig. If i hit them fairly hard they wont but when i use lighter pressure on the brakes, they squeek pretty bad. After they warm up a little bit its not AS bad, but still does it a little. I have 26K miles on it. Is that enough to consider new brakes???

ive had the same problem with mine. around 30k my front brakes started squeaking pretty bad, so i put on new pads on the front and backs. when i did that, i found out the rear passenger side pad had worn down all the way, but the backs werent the ones that squeaked.....anyways... after awhile the squeaking came back in the fronts. it doesnt do it much when i press hard, but when im pressing lightly, it makes some noise...its weird, i dont know what to do

I've barely got 5000 miles on mine and the brakes squeak - the car generally squeaks even without the brakes on.

are brakes covered under the original waranty? I think its 36k bumper to bumper. WOuld that cover "squeaky" brakes? I think they would just tell me to piss off cause they dont want to fix anything that is messed up on my car ever. i had to take it to them 4 seperate times before the mechanic realized my rear sway bar was broke. HATE the stealership.

if you want them replaced its under 12k. mine lasted about 20k an i had to replace them you can do it yourself i can PM you instruction if you need. highway driving can kill when you have to brake hard, or slow off for traffic. just bend overw ith a light an check it out there sohuld be a metal tab visable.

I thought my brakes were down to the metal too at 10k, but when I went in for inspections, they said it was still very good. I checked them again and saw that I was wrong when I inspected them... they ARE pretty good still. Doing a visual inspection is always best, maybe even taking off your tire to check?

I've gotten 47k out of my brakes, and still have a little over 1/4 of the pads left to go. But I drive a LOT of highway miles, and don't brake very often while I am on the highway.

Did you machine your rotors when you changed the pads? The brakes will only go bad again if the rotors are warped.

The inside pad will generally wear down faster then the outside pad.

no, i havent machined the rotors yet, and i know, i should have. but when i found that out, i decided to just put a bandage on it and put the new pads on and save up for some powerslot rotors...might as well upgrade right. oh and your right, it was the inside pad that was worn out..

I have 60k km (375000 mi) on mine and have never heard them make any noise and the car stops on a dime.

This is a bad paint drawing of what my brake pad looked like at 16,000 miles. This is a top view. The brake pad cracked from the center channel of the pad towards the ends. Basically the pad was cracking off the plate on the back. It really didn't affect my braking. I didn't know until I went for an inspection.

I have just recently been given a 96 protege. 73k miles. Needs state inspection. Brakes { sounds more front} grind like I have metal brake pads. checked all and look fine.Pads fairly new,no fluid leaks at piston, wheel cyl.{rear drums} no scaring, grooves in rotor. No problems at master cyl. no shimmy, jerking or pulsation when brakes applied, just a loud grinding noise, cold or hot! No ABS. Are ABS pads different than standard? Warped rotors? Maybe we have the same problem!
