Rough Idle in Drive.

I have a 99 1.6 Protege with 70,000 miles and Automatic. The engine runs smooth however in gear there is a vibration felt in the drivetrain standing still when the car is in drive. I have read numerous posts with regards to the EGR valve. Would that be the only cause? The car performs fine in general, and the timing belt was just changed. Any suggestions? All feedback would be appreciated.

Did your CEL come on ? If so, check the codes. Advanced Auto will check it free. I have a similar problem only it rattles & shakes at start up, not in Drive. My CEL came on. It was an "EGR Excessive Air Flow" code P0049. I think. There is a numerous amount of ways to deal with EGR valve on this site. From just cleaning, to replacing the EGR valve. Do a search for EGR. But I would first make sure that was your problem. You know cars. It could be a hundred different things causing this. Someone more mechanically inclined then myself will give you their more expert opinion.

No CEL light comes on. Just a rough idle in drive. Yes, I agree it can be many different things, that is why I have asked for a heads up on any common causes. If it were to be a hard diagnosis, I would just live with it as the car runs so well other than that one issue.

i bet its the motor mount.

I believe if it were a motor mount there would be some different symptoms. There is no clunk when going into drive. I haven't tried putting it into drive and giving it gas while I'm on the brake to see it the engine moves up or from side to side. Somehow, I don't think so, but if it were, it would be such an easier diagnosis and fix.

I just had rough idleing but it was fixed by new spark plugs and spark plug wires.

Does anybody know if the rough idleing would cause any damage to my motor mounts to where i need to replace them.

Maybe I should describe my car symptoms differently than a rough idle in Drive. I would call it a vibration inside the car and by the gearshift lever when the car is in drive. The engine itself is quite smooth in park.

of course its alot smoother in park cause the engine is not working through the transmission against the brake. get under the hood and play with the throttle plate, and see how much the engine moves. vibration inside the car sounds alot like the mount plus the fact that its bad in drive.

if its not the mount then it can be a vac leak. observe the idle rpm in park.

The next time I get in the car, I will check to see if the vibration changes when I go from Drive to Reverse. If it does, we can be pretty certain it is the motor mount. However, there are many mounts in this engine. It must be carefully diagnosed as not to waste money on the wrong mount. My service manager mentioned that as long as the car does not clunk (which it doesn't) you can drive with the vibration for quite some time.

your thinking the way i used to think,(hand) but the motor spins the same way in reverse, and is always jerking at the front mount, which is the most important mount to answer your question.

Isn't the front mount the least expensive mount to replace? Are we talking about the mount towards the radiator up on top?
