I saw a roof top tent display on top of a Land Rover last year at an autoshow. My question is: can the CX-9 roof has enough support for a 120-150 lbs weight while on the move, and can it support an additional 300-350 lbs when two small persons sleep in the tent? Check this site to see what I am talking about:

I"m not 100% certain but here's my take. The factory rails are rated at 100 lbs. 120 - 150 lbs is already exceeding the weight limit. Even if you went after market, I doubt you'll find rails that will take 320 ~ 500 lbs. With regards to the roof, cars are made to protect within a certain limitation, the occupants in the event of a car flipping over and landing on the roof so I'm sure the roof can take quite a bit of weight. However, putting all that weight on 4 specific points on the roof, i doubt it.

I agree with stock Mazda roof racks it probably would not support the load. However, it does state with aftermarket roof racks (which I might add are considerably stronger than the stock ones) it can easily handle the loads. Look at some of the vehicles as examples and how the width and spread are used to calculate load capability. I highly doubt some of those vehicles have a stronger roof than the CX9. Also, the stock roof racks are rated at 100-150lbs. I suggest if you are really serious to go by the aftermarket load rating for a CX9 and not the stock racks. I have the stock ones with a large Thule and its no way as strong as the aftermarket racks I have seen on other CX9's.

Very cool pop-top camper but pretty pricey!
Just my .02c.....
