Resurfacing Headlights?

Got a question for the pro's


Background: My 02 p5 has a terrible residue/oxidation on the headlights. I've tried regular scrubbing and heavy duty Tar-gone/Goo Gone to no avail. It almost feels like clear overspray, or something acidic got on the lights. I'm planning on removing them soon and painting the chrame piece black, via the How-To....

Is is possible to restore/resurface my headlights?

How should I go about it? Any products that can help me out?

I'm guessing that IF it will work, I'll need to hit it up with some 1500 grit wetsand, or finer...but IDK.

Yea I need to do that to my headlights also. They are all scratched up.

Chrome polish works well. I did that just before having the rockblocker light protection installed ( www.rockblocker.com ). The combination between polishing my headlights and the light blue rockblocker you couldn't see the chips in the headlights any more.

After ten years of highway driving, my 96 Escort GT headlights also became 'frosted'. I first used 400 grit, followed by 600 grit sand paper, and finally used polishing compound (not rubbing compound which is coarser) and buffer machine to bring back the clear luster to the lexan headlight lens.

Has anyone ever bought a cheap set of headlights of ebay and just used the outer clear lens to put on your existing headlights?

Btw, redneck, do you have a close-up pic of your headlights? I was wondering what he rock blocker actually looks like on them.

I had good results with Meguiars PlastX and my portercable. I neglected to take before and after pics but it worked well for the light oxidation/fogginess on my girlfriends cars' headlights.

wat i did

wat i did to a headlight that had a good gash in it. wet sanded with 400, then 600, then 2000. after all that use rubbing compound follow with polishing compound then to my advantage i have a high speed buffer (dewalt professional w/ variable speed) and i used that to buff the heck out of it with some carnuba wax.. good luck

cool...10-12 bucks in sandpaper is better than a $30 product with unknown results!

For the buffing portion, I'll have to use a drill attachment, I think it'll work!?

good thing i seen this i had a thread a while back on how to do this and i still need to do it.i tried that Plastix but it didnt do very good without a buffer.im about to buy on of those mothers buffballs so ill use that and let yall know how it does.
