I have a CX-5 2014 and from New Zealand. I wrote into Mazda making a complain about the resuming playback issue. The reply was that Mazda has "advised that a fix for this has been identified and we are waiting for parts to be made available. At this stage we don’t have an accurate ETA, so can you please let us know your vehicle details to we can contact you when we have parts stock available?"
Below is the email I've got from them. My original email contains other 'complains' which I included to make it look like I mean business (evil)

Thank you for your feedback. The below email is a little long, but you did provide quite a bit of feedback which we appreciate. I have noted answer under each query and hopefully haven’t missed anything.
With respect to the Bluetooth and song / album functionality:-
The introduction of both grace notes and voice recognition (These features were added after the vehicle was launched in New Zealand) the bluetooth module now down loads all the song data from the paired audio device when the ignition key is turned on. This enables you the listener to select which song/s you would like to listen to, by artist, song name or genre using the voice control function. With this feature every time the car is switched off and restarted the song download is re-initialised. Unfortunately, in our efforts to improve functionality on one way, we have limited it in others.
Answer We are aware of this feature and have reported it back to Mazda Corporation for their attention. However we have been advised that a fix for this has been identified and we are waiting for parts to be made available. Other issues:
- Load time. Not only does it take 3-5 minutes for the USB drive to initially load, scrolling through songs, albums, and artists takes a few seconds to load EACH page of only about 10 items.
The drive should be indexed!
Answer This is related to the above concern above and should be repaired with new parts when available.
- USB play does not have play by folder functionality. A basic function in any MP3 player nowadays.
Answer - As above.
- Voice recognition could be better. Navigation system does not support voice recognition in New Zealand. Why is that ?
Answer - This is decided by a contractual / design agreement with the various markets that the vehicle is sold and unfortunately New Zealand missed out on this option
- No support for RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver?
Answer - This feature was not specified for New Zealand so is unable to be resolved.
- Bad trunk lighting
Answer - We can feed this back to Mazda Corporation. This is the first negative feedback we have received about this.
- No lock on the glove box
Answer - Yes that seems to be the trend these days on most new vehicles.
- Automatic windows. Sometimes when you park your car, you realized than you left some windows open. We all have done this one or more time.
Most cars will keep the juice flowing to the windows controls for a limited time or until you crack open the door so you can correct your mistake without turning the car back on.
What Mazda does instead is only give you ONE auto-up/down, illuminated window switch which will remain active after turning off the ignition.
All the other switches are left lifeless and dark. Either Mazda thinks people will only ever forget to close the driver side window, or they didn’t feel like wiring up the remaining the 3 (+ moonroof) window switches to a computer-controlled circuit and gluing in an LED.
Answer - These specifications change between markets and we were not able to option auto windows on all doors or "Global" Opening / closing of windows / sunroof.
I believe all almost all these issues are all fixable through a software update, whether put on a CD for consumers to install themselves, or through a dealer update.
Please consider doing this, to help both current and future Mazda owners which could be/or already ultimate loyal customers.
Answer- As we have noted above, some of the concerns you've identified are able to be fixed locally however where there is a specification decision for our market , we cannot change these items.
Some specifications are dictated to us by Mazda Corporation, others are dependent on Australian specifications, and other decisions are made based on cost and as you will understand the more features you include the higher the final purchase price so in all cases it is a balancing act to get the Features Verses Cost ratio correct.
We are continually reviewing our vehicle specifications and do adjust these where possible for the benefit of our valued Mazda Customers, and we will certainly feed your comments back to Mazda Corporation.

I recently purchased a CX-5 Limited 2014 model.
As a proud owner of your vehicles, I feel as though Mazda is lacking in a few areas. I feel conned thinking about it.
Don't get me wrong, the vehicles itself is remarkable in many ways but it is subpar in terms of quality and satisfaction.
While they're not end of the world problems, it is annoying to the max knowing that I paid more than 50 grand for it.
My main issues is with the Infotainment/navigation system...
Music starts from Track 1 on USB (Flash Drive) on car start. It doesn’t remember the last song/artist/album played from a USB drive.
So it plays the first alphabetical song on the drive every time you start the car.
i.e
I played some songs, stop the car, get down and do my errands, come back, restart the engine, the song starts back from the first song again.
It does not resume from where it last stop. When I did a test drive, it was on a CX-5 2013 edition and it had no such problem. Dealer said 2014 edition will be the same if not better, which I believe. Why would a newer version be not as good? Indeed indeed... so can Mazda tell me why?
Don't tell me it's a feature as anyone with common sense would know that this is a flaw, either in design and/or in quality control.
If it was a decade ago when USB technology was not that mature than I might have accepted this. But c'mon, even my 2001 car head unit is able to resume from where it left off. If someone was listening to audio books, they will need to start over from the beginning every time? The poor fella will never get to finish his book!
I'm sure the head-unit has memory capabilities, it saves radio station presets, etc. Why wasn't this obvious? It wasn't a problem in
the CX-5 2013 edition so something must have gone wrong. I say lack of quality control. Or could it be lack of a better sense of what a customer/car owner want?
As a workaround, I tried playing from my phone via bluetooth. Bummer, I encountered speed problem instead. Everytime I get into my car, connect my bluetooth, it downloads information from my phone. While this being performed, I'm unable to play any songs via bluetooth till it completes (which usually takes a few minutes).
Again, really annoying. It also takes a few seconds when I try to switch to the next songs. A.N.N.O.Y.I.N.G.
Surely Mazda can come up with a faster, more reliable and user friendly interface other than this?

Don't take offence if I sounded harsh... I'm just frustrated. My purpose is only to be heard and to know that Mazda will do something.
The CX-5 is very a nice car. Don't let these small matters take it down the drain.
I would love to hear back from you guys, or even better to know that some action has been taken and an ETA in sight for a software update.
