Rear wheel drive conversion

There's a P5 in New Zealand or Australia that drag races, is tubbed out, and has a rotary engine. Of course it's not streat legal but the thing is ridiculous! I have pics somewhere.

I've seen that one on these boards.

But if you're asking about street-legal or actually practical Proteges... no such luck.

Since there's an AWD version, technically, you could buy one, or the running gear off of one, and spend a few months cutting up your floorpan and installing the rear differential, driveshaft and transmission from the AWD model, then weld the front differential shut and call it a day. But I don't know if that rear diff can take a lot of power, it wasn't built to be used in a RWD application.

You could go cheap and just make it up as you go along... Miata rear suspension, custom welded rear mounts, new tunnel welded into your floorpan and a new engine mounted longitudinally... heck, anything's possible if you're crazy and/or rich enough. Helps to be both.

there is a rear wheel drive conversion kit for the focus so anything is possible... they did it on a car show and it was a huge job .

at any rate, you wouldn't want to use your daily driver. I would go to the junkyard and get a shell, then you wouldn't be hosed if you cut it up and can't get it back together.

heres how you do it......

1. get in protege.
2. drive to dealer.
3. trade in protege for rx8

voila, rwd & and rotary conversion in 3 simple steps.

LOL! And, it's probably cheaper than all the shop time spent setting everything up!

That is not quite a P5. Most likely a tube chasis, fiberglass, 1 piece body...

Make no mistake, that would run as much money as the car cost brand new or more. Engine reconfig., diff. tranny... your entire drivetrain would be differant.

You don't need AWD to bear him on the highway, just mods, lot's of mods...

I can walk an Evo from a roll, only done it twice, but it can be done.

AWD +AT+No Turbo means you aren't likely to kill an Evo with an AWD conversion... and I'm not sure if the JDM AWD has a strong enough drivetrain for turbo-charging.
