Rear bumper extension coming off (again)!!!

I got the rear bumber extension re-taped when I got flashed. Had the car for a little over 2 months then. Now... it's starting to separate in the same location (right above the muffler) (pissed) (chair)!!!!! Will probably have them redo the damn thing when I get my "fix" bushings in the next few weeks.

Has anybody else had this problem? I posted about this when it first happened, but got no response so I thought the tape was just bad and that new tape will work. Now that it's happening again... it makes me wonder if anybody else is having this same issue and if they had a better solution than just reapplying that tape they use.

I know there are others who have had this problem. This however is 1 problem I haven't had yet myself.

Feel lucky. This one is really pissing me off. I'm wondering if I need to maybe put some type of heatshield material between the muffler and the bumper. That's where the separation always starts. It could also be that my extension doesn't fit right with the bumper so it's reacting naturally and trying to get back to it's original shape. (shrug)

Edit: I can also see the front extension starting to separate too. Right at the vents in front of the wheels.

Yeah, mine fell off, too. I left my car at the dealership for 3 days so they could fix that and do the flash. (which, by the way, did not help the hesitation). It started on mine just above the exhaust also. I guess I can look forward to it falling off again, huh.

Well... not to sound funny, but Right on! Now I've got more ammo to bring to the dealer. They were telling me that it's a temperature problem and that the cold evenings are causing the tape to fail and there is nothing they can do.

Now that I know it's happening in SC, I can slap that back at them and hopefully get a fix out of them. Thanks for the info Fatdaddy.

Anybody else having these problems... please post them and also what corrective action (if any) was taken by the dealer.

i didnt have that problem, but the new piece they installed after the accident does have this problem.

I'm having the same problem. Right above the muffler. I don't wanna take it to the stealership so they can jack me out of a rent a car and abuse my car. I live in San Jose. Mazda should publish a TSB for this problem. Seems like a lot of people are having this problem.

Hey Man, I haven't seen you on here, say hi to the HWY 9 crew and hook up with the bay area folks, lots of threads over in regional. Nice to see another San Jose Mazdaspeed. Which Stealership did you get your's at? I try to avoid the dealer as much as possible...

I'll have to go look at mine and see how it is doing. I remember it catching my eye earlier today, but I don't think it was coming off really badly.

yeah i have the same problem dont keep bringing it back to mazda the adhesive on the tape they use will not hold up to the heat from the exhaust. i cant bring mine back because they will just say its from the apexi muffler. but anyways go to a home depot or a lowes and get a roll of industrial strength double sided tape made by 3M take the whole section off and clean it really good and apply the tape. a couple of people have tried this and have not had problem yet.

I've had the problem too (just a little bit) but mine is in the rear on the corners not near the muffler.....

ya, my gf just noticed that mine was comming off to...(the bumber that is).. im goin in next week to tet it fixed.

I'm going to have the dealer do it for now. If it keeps coming off... and I have to keep coming back, I may start getting nasty and having them pay my gas too (dealer's 120 miles away). I know it's a stupid issue (vs our hesitation and overly rich setup or the issue with people's airbags... any new info on that?), but if I b**** enough... hopefully they'll fix it so they don't have to deal with me again. :D

Thanks for all the info guys. (thumb)

I hade that problem right above the muffler too. The dealer said it was a common problem. But it's not just our cars, they said it's happening on the Rx8 and the 6 at differnt spots though, Got mine fixed and havn't had a problem yet. They have to use a thicker double sidded tape taht's supposed to fix it, who know. I have not had my car flashed yet but it seem to run fine. What problems are you guys having that it needs to be flashed? maybe i'll just go get it done for the hell of it, hey it's free.

Bremmer, 1st off... welcome to the forum. There's a thread (somewhere) around here that explains the flash a hell of a lot better and more in depth than I can. The Cliff Notes version is that we have a hesitation that you'll feel from about 3000-5000 rpm (sometimes you will and sometimes you won't) that is believed to be casued by our overly rich fuel map. The flash corrects this NOT by leaning out the fuel mixture, but by advancing the timing. If you plan to modify it, some of the site gurus recommend to not get the flash... It's entirely up to you. Do a search and see what comes up. (the search button is your best friend here)

About the tape... I got the thicker tape (original was black. the replacement was white and noticably thicker) and it's starting to come off again in the same location.

Atuox MSP: I think this is another Big Brother Ford problem... tape costs less than bolts... unless we keep bitching about it and they need to buy stock in 3M. Hopefully there will be a better fix coming up.

Thanks.. yeah I found the thread about it, helped much more. I plan to mod the car with the basics, fmic, have the intake, exhaust and what not. but will it affect the car if you up the boost by say 1 or 2 psi? I don't plan on going above 10 psi.
