the list is long..
short shifter, engine mount, stereo, speakers, turbo suspension, brakes..

where is the best place to start and are there any mods to avoid or companies to avoid?

hey,

k&n typhoon intake
b&m short shifter w/ kartboy or similiar bushings
Tokico Illuminas w/ a good set of springs
AWR motor mounts

i would go somewhat in that order

Matt

If you can afford it, a turbo is always a great place to start. Otherwise, CAI, header, catback, motor mounts, Illuminas, HPs, or full coilovers, short shifter. The skys the limit really, just do some searching and figure out what you wanna do.

Good list, I'd sub a kartboy shifter for the B&M, and add something like a magnaflow or greddy catback, and you're in business.

Wow, very general question. Welcome to the forum. Search around, you'll find your answers.

Welcome! Here is info I try to pass onto all the newbies who join up.

Right after I got my P5, I got the intake. You can get a short ram intake (SRI), which is what I have. Others have cold air intakes (CAI) They are about the same on ebay, but you may also opt for name brand. I have the ebay...

The next thing I did was get rid of those god forsaken Dunflop piece of s*** stock tires. I hydroplaned within the first week or so I owned the P5. I ended up with the Yokohama AVS ES 100's. 205-50-16's on the stock rims. After 23000 miles, they were through, so I got aftermarket wheels, and Kumho Ecsta 711 205-40-17s. There are a bazillion threads about tires. These I highly recommend for rainy climates. (Bottom line, get out of the stock tires before you have a problem!)

I just got (after 2.5 years of owning my car) a Racing Beat exhaust. I got an insanely good deal on it. It is on the higher end of the pricing range, but you can score one used at a good rate if you are on the forum within the .245 seconds someone posts it for sale used. They run in the high $400 range new. There is a Mazda Sport (Mazdaspeed) exhaust which is also popular, but people have complained of droning, or an annoying sound at freeway speeds. The Racing Beat does not do that. But there are a bazillion threads about the exhaust subject too, look them up.

Then there is the tinting of windows, a stereo, springs/shocks/body kit, carbon fiber everything, etc you will see around here for sale.

Short shifter is next on my list. Kartboy makes a great one, I have seen it in person. The shifter bushings are a must. Get them no matter what. Huge difference in shifting!

I found by moving to synthetic engine and transmission fluids, I get better mileage, and it shifts smoother too. So easy to do, it is worth it.

One more thing you should consider when you mod is a header. OBX and Ractive are the most common. I just installed the Ractive, and love the HP gains. Be sure to look up the Spark Plug non-fouler trick for the 2nd o2 sensor. It prevents the CEL from coming on.

Well, good luck, and check out the for sale section, and work with the Authorized Venders and sellers! Oh, search for threads about a question you might have. Most likely, it has been covered.

Although i'll probably offend a few owners with this response....

Do not do NA mods, they do not make any negligable power. I went through 2 different intakes and when i went back to stock i was suprized how much better the motor pulled. The OBX header seems to make the car rev a bit smoother but is it worth $240 for 2-3whp (have a dyno to prove it) and have to hack up your 02 sensor to dodge the CEL. Exhaust is most likeley going to be alot of noise, maybe a little better throttle response and, of course, costs more than your car payment. Doing engine mounts are difficult, but can result in much better 1/4 times, however they will vibrate the pee out of your car.

I honestly suggest going for suspension. I didnt think the stock Dunlops were bad for stock tires on an economy car. Yes, the ES100's do rock! I had some on my P5 and loved it. A short Shifter is also a great idea, it makes the tranny alot more fun. Also, look into some nice lowering springs, i loved my Eibach pro-kit. It makes for a nice low look, much improved handling and doesn't require a camber kit. On average your camber will be about -1.5, however, you WILL need an alignment to adjust the toe, I can't stress that enough, bad toe eats tires. Look for a bigger rear sway bar. Bang for the buck, a nice rear sway can't be beat.

If you really want power, just plan on turboing your car. The only problem is finding a way to tune it. There aren't any good piggy back units for the Protege ECU.

What's up man seems you are just getting into this and I'm getting out. I got a bunch of stuff for sale that you may be interested in header exhaust suspension etc. Take a look at my for sale thread in the non vendors section. I've got a great rep and a lot of the buyers will vouch for me. I ship as soon as the paypal is sent. Peace out

if you are looking for engine mounts, just remember that stiffer the mount bushing, the more vibration you will feel in the cab.i speak from experience, i wish that someone had told me this before i got mine. (nuts)

SE-R? Why?

As far as a "horsepower mod" is concerned....

175 HP @ 6000 RPM (2,710 lbs.)
180 LBs-FT @ 4000 RPM
0-60 7.2 seconds
1/4 mile 15.32 @ 90.37 mph
Top speed 135 mph

oh its a hell of an upgrade in power... :D
each car has its own issues that accompany it also (i.e. QR-DE eats screws, blows head gaskets and is the low-revving black sheep of the Nissan motor line...) it is nice to get 16whp from a header though (2thumbs)

Yeah but the new ones are sooooo ugly. I love yours, I damn near bought one of those instead of the P5, but I can't stand the newer ones.

And paranoxide, what's wrong with the neon? With $1000 invested in an upgraded suspension, hey are better than our cars in every way that matters.

i got my p5 a little over a year ago and have made only slight changes to it...main reason being i'm a broke college student. i do a lot of driving, so first things i changed were audio related to keep me entertained during my long highway trips. you'd be amazed at what a HU change can do. i did put a k&n typhoon intake in last june, and have been happy with the result. not really a noticeable power gain, but the motor sounds dramatically better under load. I recently bought a set of bridgestone blizzaks for the the snow and have been extremely pleased. you know how raidermp5 noted how the stock dunflops suck in wet weather? well, they are downright unsafe in fresh snow. next on the list is the stuff i've wanted to get right off the bat. that would be some suspension work. the p5 looks so good dropped. and if i'm really lucky and find some money, a set of msp wheels wrapped in some good rubber.

i don't know if this really helps you all that much, but that's my story about how i've started.
