Exactly, you can spend all the money you want, but are limited to $1000 in this 'exercise.' So leaving the stock head unit in is a good option in this price range. Just my opinion though.

Good point, BUT Since you are all putting subs in anyways, why spend the extra money on nice 6"x9"s when essentially all you are going to be utalizing from them is the tweeter? I agree with a lot of you. I'd love to have those speakers in the back, but they aren't necessary, its going to move the sound towards the back of the car, and lower overall sound quality. Where as if you replace the headunit, you have more control over the system, and can tweak it to sound balanced. You can all save money on speakers to get a better headunit.

first off, Zooooooooooom, read the posts on this link made by david navone:

he's one of the most respected people in car electronics today. he knows far more than 99% of everyone in the industry today. stock decks can be quite good, if they have half way decent adjustments, and you get a decent LOC.

secondly, triplexkustomz, what meter do you plan on hitting over 150 on with a sub with 16 mm of excursion and only a 1200 watt amp? i need one of them;) it's possible, but extremely unlikely without a s*** ton of interior modifications, and probably a wall. i've done enough comps to know. it'd be much more possibly with an HC, and definite with a XXX:D hell, i beat a guy with a 6 cu ft box, dd 9515, and 2 us 1000 watt amps with a power acoustik mofo 15 and 1200 watt amp, and we were only doing high 140's at the time. in the most recent comp i was at, a guy had 2 RE HC 12's in his CRX, and he barely broke 150 dB.

Thanks Wake!
I have been looking for a link to that artical. I had Dave email it to me once but I have no place to put it online for linking.

only the cheap ones. they worked great on a few installs. i want to try the nice ones when i get an install job that the person cares more about quality;)

.:wtf:Ok obvoiusly you dont know much about spl first off a SE has 18mm of excursion i just got off the phone with a tech there who just happens to be a member of my team. Xmax plays a very small roll im an spl application (ie. high tuned box) It doesnt matter if you have a woofer with 30mm of xmax or a woofer with 10mm. Yes xmax is great in dailt drivers it makes the woofer out put much more ie. if the box is tuned to 35 hz but in an pspl app it plays a very small roll. In the right box 150 is a VERY VERY VERY obtainable score. I told him you said it wasnt possible and he about died laughing especially when I told him you were the spl guru on the forum. We have a guy who is sponcered by adire BY THE WAY that did a 155 with 1 RE 35.1 (1500 watts) with 1 se 15 ON A LINEAR X METER!! Now if you know what a linear x is its one of the toughest meters made. He does around 160 in usaci on the audio control. He is a record holder in MECA. Another guy we have has 2 se 12's and 1 35.1 and it does 155-157 all day long tuned to 40hz.Another does high 140's with 4 re 8's and 1 orion 1200d and your going to tell me those 8's have alot of xmax?. I could go on but whats the point? I said it could hit 150 with the 35 hz plug out and he said it couldnt Ive seen it time and time again. I do this for a living and I am sponcered by memphis car audio and by cadence. Wheres your accomplishments?Wheres your world finals trophys? Oh and by the way all of the above scores were in stock vehicles with little or no sound deadening!!!! Im not tryin to start a flame war but dont claim to be a SPL guru when your doin high 140's break 160 then call me. I did 152.7 in usaci 2 years ago with a hurricane sound labs 12 and 1500 watts im my mp3. Dont tell me I cant do something just because you dont have the knowledge to do so. ANY decent installer knows its 90% install and 10% equipment. I saw a guy in db drag do a 155 off the dash LEGAL with 4 of the big THUMP woofers with 2 fosgate bd1000's! Id meet you in the lanes any day of the week.:wtf:

Actualy I didn't realize this was in my challenge, s*** now I have to move it out! But where to put it?

Oh ill be here! I been here for a while I just havent been on in a LONG time and I cant remember my old user info lol.

I do want to point out Im not trying to be a smartass but you have to understand that most ppl on here are NOT spl competitors so when they look at posts like these they are here to learn. Just like when I look at the performance forums I dont know dick about that stuff but it only takes 1 person who makes ppl think he knows what hes talking about to completely ruin there perseption on the subject. I dont have a prob with someone thinkin they know more about it than me because many MANY ppl do BUT I do have a prob with ppl tellin me I cant do something I have alredy done and missinforming ppl that are here to learn because they have think they know what there talkin about.Because I KNOW almost anything is possible when it comes to SPL its not all about equip like everyone thinks it is or how much money you can spend. PEACE!!!!!

Dude! Chill and let wake at least come back before you dog him in a second post! :D

Let's try to keep it at least balanced...I'm pretty sure he does know what he's talking about, and currently I have no reason to doubt you, so I'll see who prevails in this battle royale...but at least keep it civil. We've had enough petty arguing in the MSP forum to cover for the whole board!

I'm just here to learn how to get some bump...
...in the trunk...
cause all the ladies love a man w/ bump in the trunk.
(naughty)

Well i wasnt bashin in the second post. Im sorry if it was taken that way. I can take honest criticism thats not a prob if you dont think Im right about something fine tell me why you think im not right. And Ill tell you why I think I am. this forum is for discussion not arguments.

Cool...not that you had to listen to me or anything! :D I'm just an audio n00b...love music and sound, but haven't been a car audiophile. I figured I'd at least try to learn some...now where did wake go...hmm?

Sorry I jacked your Audio Challenge post :D
I don't know how well our specific headunits match up to aftermarket decks, but after reading that article, i have to give them a little more respect. But I'd still replace it in a 1000 system...

I split the thread becuase i am hoping you two can get alot of good info out to everyone. Competition does that.
Either way both of you guys are the type to battle then be-friend so i am not worried there, Wake will be along soon :D

I think you both are doing a good job of keeping it civil. Keep up the posting!!!!! And keep it healthy, we are all on here to learn!

Let me also say I know JACK about car audio. Man, I read y'all posts and felt like I was in first grade trying to figure out quantum mechanics....jeez, Im an idiot.
