Radar Detectors

I need one but i'm not sure what to get. I'd rather not spend more that $100. any suggestions or features to look for? thanks

best advice I can give:

You get what you pay for...

with that said, even though you will pay more than $100 I would recommend the Escort Passport 8500 x50. Pretty much anything under $100 is going to be as good as your eyes anyway. Plus theyll give soo many false warnings that you will stop paying attention to it altogether...

Yeah, had a $150 radar detector before, sucked balls... If you pay 100 for 1, don't expect to speed more than 5mph b/c any more than that and you're about screwed when the pigs catch you with a radar detector... Personally, pay the big amounts the first time and it'll save you in the long run. My v1 has saved me countless # of times now so do your research and pick 1 that you like.

With radar detectors you get what you pay for. Honestly dont get one unless you get a good one... Just my .02 because one GOOD radar detector will be the price of 1 ticket after its all said and done. heres mine. Just picked it up about a week ago. Escort Passport 8500 X50 Blue .. Its the s***.

V1, X50 (or even an 8500), Or the rx65, rx65 and 8500 is same thing, Just the 8500 has all the bells and whistles.

This isn't totally true. I've had a cheap Whistler radar ($90 at best buy 6 years ago), and it's saved my ass countless times. But, I think it's finally on its way out.

BTW, is it me, or are all of the expsensive radar detectors enormous?

i disagree with all these fools

bel express 795

about $100 and has saved my ass numerous times. the only false warning i get are in store parking lots where i dont speed anyway

i drive 50-60 miles a day on the highway(10 miles at a time) and i go 10-15 over all the time and still have a clean record

I guess I should add this even if you do get a radar.

1. Dont speed over hills and if you do watch the cars in front of you. If they are all braking at a certain point chances are there is either a cop or another good reason they are all trying to slow down at the same time.

2. See above for going around tight curves

3. As soon as you go under an overpass look up on the entrance ramp to see if there is a cop using radar way up there. If you catch it fast you may be able to slow down quick enough.

4. Take a good look under overpasses before you get to them. On a sunny day it can be a b**** to see a cop sitting in the shade under an overpass until it is too late

5. This doesnt pertain to my area, but I have seen cops in other areas sit on top of an overpass looking down at oncoming traffic. When they catch someone the get on the highway and catch up.

6. MOST IMPORTANT is know your area and where the cops sit. On my commutes there are only about 10 places I have ever seen cops sitting and I know them all so I make sure to look well ahead or slow down for that small stretch untul I can be certain there is no cop there

Think ahead while you are driving and know your surroundings and chances are very very good that you won't get caught with or without a radar:)

to give you an idea of how big the range is on the v1, I was doing 120 on an open stretch of highway(really open stretch with little traffic at the time), v1 chirped ka and started getting stronger, immediately, braked down to 70 and the cop showed up 2-3 seconds later and didn't realize a thing.

PS, wasn't street racing with anyone on the roads, just was really needing an adrenaline rush after finals.

Ive done a comparison against a cheap cobra unit (my brother's, dont know the model) my passport 8500 (which has since been stolen) and a V1

V1 and passport picked up nearly identical reaction times. the cobra, wouldnt always pick it up unless it was full on and pointed @ the car. It also wasnt good long range, didnt have the ability to see more than one reading @ a time, and sucked directionally wise...

My passport 8500 had the ability to display up for 4 simultaneous signals on each band (k, ka, x and laser) which helped WONDERS. Around here cops like to sit where there are false readings. With the passport 8500 I could see the false reading AND the cop. Or I could see 2 readings, one a cop behind me and one a cop ahead of me...

its range was rediculous too. Theres a long straight section around here that cops like to sit on... and its slightly hilly as well. I had my radar detector go off, and slowly build up. It was about a mile before I actually saw the cop (and yes I could tell it was the same cop because there was only one reading on the unit listed).

Spend $50 for that radio shack brand if you like, but its seriously a waste of money IMHO. Like someone else said, its the cost of a speeding ticket (one in my case BEFORE the detector was $520 so its actually cheaper to buy the radar detector) so just spend the money right. You will be soo much happier that you did.

You compared with a Cobra.. No Rotor is talking about a Whistler.. whistler is what I would call a "top tier" radar detector company. I'd get one in the Beltronics RX series if my Beltronics Vector 985 would ever die haha

BEL Electronic
Escort
V1

Everything else your taking a risk. Simple answer... don't speed. I also don't use mine in town, just on highway trips or cruises.

and to think i'm tempted to get one even though radar detectors are illegal in teh Great Communistwealth (peep)

will have to buy and have it shipped to a MD address and then pick it up later lol
